Turnout Blanket Shopping...Help!

I have credit at Dover and I am WAY less than satisfied with the McAllister I purchased (though I am not really surprised) so I'm shopping for a new blanket.

My mare is going to be in a box stall until July and then will be outside with shelter. I don't know how hard she is on blankets as this is my first winter with her, but I'd like something at least 1000D unless I find a 600D I just can't pass up. It does not get very cold here-- I don't think I've EVER seen it get colder than 30F but we do sometimes get nasty rain (not that it matters with her in a box stall!). Hence, I'm looking for something lighter weight, and if I need warmer I can add a liner or cotton sheet underneath.

These are the ones I am looking at...

I'd love to hear experiences

I have bought a lot of blankets and so far the only worth buying is my TurtleNeck by PaintRock Designs. I have had it for a few years now, my horse has worn it almost 24/7 for two winters. Other than a couple tears here and there it has held up wonderfully, and my horse is hard on blankets.

Plus, they have a really good warrenty. I sent it in for repairs after both winters and when it came back it was almost brand new.

I'd never even seen those before, but unfortunately they only come in 300gm or a sheet! 300gm is MUCH too heavy for our mild weather It's currently nearly 80F outside and we're in November!

Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to keep my eye out for those later on

If the newer Pessoa's are better than the ones a few years ago, those look nice.
It was just the hardware on the old ones that was an issue. I'm a s.ucker for plaid I must admit. They do fit full, which would be good for M. It might be too warm at 180gm though.

The Orican Lite might also be a good bet, as it actually has this pad thing on the withers that keeps it from shifting around as much. They fit the tower of pain that is Z's withers. The color isn't as fun though, bleh.

Forgot! My BM has a Centaur for one of her geldings and the quality seems alright, but it is ALWAYS hanging off of him at a funny angle.

Shannon, I'm from So-Cal as well and I bought the Rider's international turnout light weight blanket. It works very, very well. It also kept my boy dry when we had that weird week of rain. For the price, it's hard to beat!

He also loves to roll and he does it often with this blanket, which is a bit big on him (my fault, I'm afraid). But no tears, no rips, nothing. It is very light weight but for now, it's perfect. My trainer likes it very much and is surprised I got 1200D for such a low price.

I too loooove plaid The barn she's at now blankets, so I think I would be OK with a heavier blanket as long as she's there-- they can take this one off and just put on one of my lighter sheets or such if it gets too warm. Once I get her back though, I don't know if I will have a blanketing service, which is why the 100gm is nice because it won't kill her to leave it on if it warms up a bit.

If we're talking colors...I like that the Northwind comes in burgundy as that is her current barn's color. Not that it really matters, but she's too girly of a horse for hunter or navy!

Tower of pain! LOL my seatbones are hurting me just picturing riding those bareback! You're right, the color's not as fun, but I do like the looks of it.

Where in So Cal are you? I know some areas didn't get any of that nasty rain, but I did too, so maybe you are close!

So you have the Supreme blanket? Everything I am seeing says these blankets are definitely worth the money and I'm glad to have more first hand knowledge of them. Did you accidentally order a size too big, or does it just seem to fit a bit big?

(Looking for an excuse to buy the cheaper 78" rather than the 80" )

Thanks much!

You know my vote is the northwind

the pessoa my friend had was pretty bad quality, but maybe they have gotten better...

I wouldn't go with a medium weight, shut in a stall that will likely be much too warm even if she's clipped- unless the barn is really open.
