I hope everything works out well and you have a great time! Are you there for good or just awhile(I thought I remember seeing 2 years, but that could have been something else)?
From what I checked, Endo is going to be quite a distance away from where we'll be. But - we WILL be there for 2 years so you never know.

For future reference

My Husband lived in Japan for a year as an exchange student and absolutely loved it - I'm sure you will too.

My daughter just spent a few weeks in Japan as an exchange student living with a Japanese family (she speaks and can read good Japanese). I've visited Japan myself a few times on business.

Some additional tips:
1. You know it's not a bilingual society (few people speak English) so it's better to learn a few common phrases at the beginning and perhaps take some lessons for the long-term (although many Americans don't bother and just stay on base)

2. If you're a typical-size American woman, the local stores don't sell clothes/shoes your size so bring whatever you need (Even if they do chances are it's going to be rather pricy)

3. Dollar for dollar everything is more expensive in Japan. You can probably save a lot by having some things mailed to you from the States.

4. Japanese are extremely polite (even if they think you're an a**hole) and not likely to stare (unless you wear outfits from another planet). Besides they're quite used to Americans especially in places where there are military bases

5. Go to Youtube and look at some of the Japanese film clips. It will give you a feel for what it's like. Anyway the US military has English channels
