ok, so my ottb marty(which i just got this september) seems to be having some training problems i put up a thread asking what kind of bit i could use on him to make it a bit easier to ride him at the moment, but i know a new bit isn't the answer, i really need some training tips and/or advice....... k so when i ride him and stuff sometimes he gets really tense, we think he may have some anxiety problems but when i ride him out in the field he just freezes up and he won't go no matter what i do. i am really lost and not sure what i shoud do because there is no other place to ride really at the moment. i need some ideas of stuff i can do to help him want to go more!!!!! there is a 40 by 40 round pen that we can ride in and there is the lawn where there is deep snow we can ride in and stuff, which is perfectly fine and good for him, but i really would like to be able to get him out of the yard!!!!!! he was doing really well in the fall but i just don't know anymore! so if you have any ideas of what i can do to help this or to help him get over this i would really appreciate it alot! sry it is so long!!! thanks so much -Ainzli- |

I agree with, this is me old hag... Marty is just a little too much horse for you yet.. Unless un can ride Marty like your saddle in packed with Nitro-glycerin, I wouldn't take him outside in the open..

Sounds like a typical new t/b that is going to be a pain unless he's in knowledgeable hands to get him retrained and confident.

My b/f had an OTTB also. He was training him for dressage. But, we would occassionally go trail riding and this horse would want to be out front but then when he was out front...he would stop dead. We figured that's why they sold him...because he just didn't have the heart to be first. Or...maybe he was just a pacing horse. In any case..there was no way to make him go in front. Now...when my b/f first got him...he said he would take him for long walks on a 20 ft lead line (with knots) and of course, stud chain, just to get him acquainted with life off the track. Your guy might just be terrified of the outside world. Once he did this, he would then start riding him. And YES he was VERY EXPLOSIVE. That's the nature of the beast as Endorphins suggested. Eventually the horse enjoyed going out by himself more than going out with any other horse.

OKay i know personally what marty is like cause he lives at my place. He doesnt really explode at all he's fine on the lead and is good for like everything on the ground. He's normally fine on the lawn and when i rode him he was incredibly responsive and always had a welling pace and a tentive ear. I personally think that he well just take time and if you ask me ainzli is not to inexperienced to have an ottb you never saw the horses that she used to ride. On top of it she has put alot of work into marty and he's emproved tremendisley but she just needs a little pionters on how to get to the next step, getting him out of the yard (oh yah he is fine in the back this one girl who rides with us always gallops past him and he gets tense but he trusts ainzli enough to know hes okay) BUt anyway just a few pointers would be greatly appreciated cause he is going tobe absulutely wonderful. -thanx, ainzlis friend molly- p.s. ainzli i used your account my compe wont let me use mine |

I agree with the "tense rider = tense horse" equation. Step #1, RELAX! Step 2: I would forget about riding him for the moment and go to the round pen for some respect/trust work (ground work). It sounds like he does get tense and nervous. IMO, he needs some serious ground work, as do ALL OTTB's.
