Trimming a mane for showing - HELP

Hello, i have a yearling colt i'll be showing in halter this year. I showed him last year, and when i trimmed his mane, it didnt turn out looking so good :P I cant pull him mane, i dont know how nor do i have the tools. I used scissors last time. After i trimmed it, for the next few days i had to keep messing with it to get it to finally look right. Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can trim his mane for this year? I'd Appreciate it! thanx!

Check out the thinning shear step by step that I posted in this section, that should be helpful.
