Post Tricks

I want to teach my horse how to do some cool tricks. This is my first horse and she is a little old. ok, well she's 20. But she is very active. I wanted to learn how to make her rear up and cool things like that. If you can help me that's cool. But when you reply please write it so I can understand, I'm a rookie since January 2004.
Thanks a lot!!! horse_on

i'm sorry to sound like a know it all or something like that, but PLEASE do not teach your horse to rear!!! it's really cool and stuff, but if you're a rookie, it's NOT a good idea. this "trick" can turn into a habit. believe me, i just had to deal with a rearing horse (not on command) and it is no party!

Florence, seeing as how this is your FIRST horse, and you have only been involved in horses for less than 3 months - I think you should hold off on the trick training. Especially rearing. That is a VERY dangerous stunt, even for the seasoned professional. Can lead to your horse going over backwards, or for her to rear unexpectedly.

Bowing, shaking hands..etc sound really cute, but really, they can cause more trouble than they are worth. An over enthusiastic horse can hurt you by throwing themselves into the trick without warning. I witnessed a girl get her knee broken by her gelding who tried to "shake hands" with her when she wasn't prepared.

There are other "tricks" that you can perform that are great for bonding and for improving your riding skills. Teach her to come to a whistle or other call that is just hers alone. Give her a treat whenever you do that particular call. First do it when she is right there with you. Give the whistle/call and feed her a treat right away. After a short time, she'll be galloping across the pasture to you when she hears that call.

You can teach her to respond to leg aids so that you can impress everyone by riding without reins in the arena.

You can do a little join-up in the round pen and impress everyone when she stays at your shoulder and follows you everywhere you go. Even trotting if you run away.

Have fun.

my bro's gf leased her horse out the first year she was away at college and the girl would let her friend ride him. the girl's friend taught the horse how to rear on comand, w/o the owner's knowledge, and posted pics of him doing it on the web and she wasnt wearin a helmet. when the owner found out she was torked! the girls were never allowed to touch the horse after that and the owner had to un-train him and she didnt even kno the exact cue that was used! but he's all better now and doesnt rear.
