![]() | I Just bought a two year old fillie that was green broke, shes been broke for maybe two months now and i ride her every day. I had the tack fitted for her, her teeth are fine, shes been checked by the vet and her feet are sound. I take her for about a two hour ride every day and on friday (three days ago) I asked her to go into canter and she started crow hopping and bucked a couple times. I was able to stay on, and i just asked her to trot on and canter again, she cantered fine... The next day I took her out and immediately when i asked for canter she started bucking and rearing and i fell right off.. its like she perpously wanted me off.. but i wasnt asking anything wrong, i asked her in the correct way to canter, and she shouldnt have been confused at all about what i was asking... Anyways I got back on her and we started off on our treck again. Once again i asked for canter and she bucked me right off. The same thing happened yesterday, and im afraid that if she does it again and i get hurt, ill be scared to get back on her! The only problem with her is that I have moved to a new house and I have no round pen or any small arenas where i can work out this problem. During the winter however, i will be moving her into a stabling area where they have an arena.. but I don't want to wait that long to sort out this problem.. she has to know its not okay to buck when i ask her for canter. I just cant figure out how to do that!! Please help somebody!

Shes two... shes a baby! She might just be overloaded. She may need some time off to just be a horse and grow a bit.

She is probably getting to that point where she is testing you. And it could be that riding 2-3 hours at a time is too much for her and she is just getting annoyed. My 2 yr old has started being a PITA after her first warm up at shows. She has been refusing and rearing, something she had not been doing before. So my trainer stayed on her until she stopped that behavior and then she got to rest. Perhaps your filly is figuring out that if she behaves that way that you get off, because you don't want to get hurt, who does! Maybe give her a week break and then start again, if she still does it then stay on until she behaves. Do you have a trainer that can help? Sometime just getting someone else on them can help both of you, I know it has helped me! Good luck with her and keep us posted!

I agree, 2 hours is a lot for a 2 yr old. Amber is 2 1/2 and keeping her focussed for a half hour is a chore at times! To me, it sounds as though she got tired and cranky, bucked and went AHA! THAT'S how we get her off! Do you have a lunge line? I would be tempted to throw that on her, without you and her saddle on, and see if she's still doing it. Could be that she wasn't sore before, but now is. ETA: Was she ridden that much per day by the previous owners?

I agree, 2 hours is a LOT for a 2yr old! Even when i've done the 2yr old AQHA futurity horses, i've never spent 2 hours a day riding them! Give the mare some time off and turn her out for a while. she's probably needs some mental and physical time off. when you do start riding her again, I would cut the amount of time way down.. maybe a half hour?

I agree - 2 hours is a long time for a 2 year old. I didn't start riding my colt until he was 3 and when I ride him I don't ride him for then 30 minutes but that could go a little longer since I try to stop on a good note! Give her a break, turn her out. Give her time to grow up a little bit.

Agreed with everyone, riding for 2 hours+ everyday is a lot to ask for a 2 year old. Maybe just try working her for an hour at the most and only every other day? And once you introduce something new to her training then either give her a break for a little bit or work on something else that she knows. Good luck with her!

Thanks everyone for your help. The person who trained her rode her everyday shes a strong little mare and yes i will cut down riding time, and i will try to lounge her, but will she still lounge good even if im not in an arena or round pen?

| Senior Member+ | She should if they trained her too. She sounds smart so even if they didn't, I am sure you can get her going well on a longe line no problems.
