Training for Yearling Filly...

Okay.. so what else can I work on with my yearling filly?
she bathes, loads/hauls, picks up her feet, stands tied and cross tied, stands nicely for groomwing, I can touch her anywhere on her body... she does NOT spook easy (im going to start using things to desensitize her ie tarps etc) she also lunges at the walk, and ground drives with a halter...I also did some roundpenning lightly with her walk/trot...
I was going to teach her to pony, but sold my QH..and our clyde is a0 too big to pony her off of and b) has just been sytarted u/s and thinks all other horses are going to eat him while u/s ( )
SO.. what else can I d with her?.. I was going to maybe starting grounddriving her with a surckingle now.. maybe put my lightweight english saddle on her (wintec).. what else can I do with her?!

you can get her used to the feeling of stuf on her back and a girth, maybe. But as for the saddle...eh, not really. Le ther have time to be a horse and play and romp and whatnot. I was having the same non issue with my filly, so I gave her some time off and now we are going to work on doing yearling halter classes for fun at the local show. Maybe you could try that?

bomb proof is a really good idea with everything you can think of. We have a yearling colt and didn't know it till it happened but my son rode down to the barn on his bicycle and the closer he got to the colt with the bicycle the more he freaked out. So my son just hung around the colt and touched him with the bike and let him smell it. He still may be a little leary about it but next time it shouldn't be so bad.

I wouldnt suggest a saddle.. Yet. Instead get a bareback pad with the stirrups that can come off.. Give her some time to get used to that then add the stirrups..
Sometimes just spending time with them, not working is the best..
we spend alot of time just hanging out with Lilly and she is almost a year (we guess)
Ground driving at this age is kinda hard as well.. Lead her places, walk her down the roads, over tarps, make a wooden bridge and walk her over and around it.

At this age, its ok if she is just a horse

My filly can do all that to! (nice to know that i am right on schedual..)

but i did teach her how to pony... and she i fine with a saddle on her (english-- though i am sure she would fine with a western) she is to small to put a girth on and i never Leave the saddle on her i just randomly put it on her back when i am grooming and then take it off... (it doenst have anything attachet to it not even stirrups-)

i really need to start despook her but keep putting it off...

how is your filly with bathing and flyspray? Lilly hates the hose...(when there is water coming out)

make sure she can lead really well (that is the main thing i am working on...)

What is your fillies name? Mine is Lilly and she is an Appaloosa....

Possibly some SAFE tricks. Bowing and laying down possibly? You could get her used to the bit and ground driver her with it. Have you ponied her yet?

She wil also ahve to go over the overpass to get there... ooh spooky!
I have taken her for walks on the roads and trails lots.
Yes she leads great!

kay, well I wasnt too sure about the saddle... Ill wait till shes closer to two. She seems to LOVE to learn. I have though about a few tricks, but I plan on that after she is broke and going well.
Her name is Desi and she is a reg APHA
Thanks for al the tips and suggestions!.. I have a bareback pad, without stirrups... I will put that on her!

The CPOA and ASP/CWB show yearlings and two year olds on the line. Its just they dont ask for alot and there on a big circle

exactly! leading her to different places is a great idea, too much training will stress a young horse out, and they have alot of years to do training so i really would not push any farther.
