Trailering Question

I will try not to make this too convoluted I'm considering buying a new horse for my kids. The seller is 5 hrs away (near my grandparents home). I thought I could take two of my horses to ride at the home place & possibly pick up the new horse on the way home. Am I asking for trouble trailering a new horse w/ two others for that long?

What kind of trailer do you have?

If they are divided - then I don't think it'd be a problem. In fact, it might even make the trip easier on your new horse.
However, if it's like an open stock type trailer, they might fight a bit.
I really think you'll be fine though.

I would not chance it in a open stock trailer..you would not want to have to figure out how to get them home individually after that length of a trip! If you have a straight or angle haul, I would bring at least one horse, it does make the trip more comfortable for them to be with another horse.

We have a 24' stock trailer. It is divided into 3 compartments.

Well, if they can be separated...go for it.

Okay - now I'm adding to the question I've never trailered so far...I've never tied my horses while trailering. Do I need to get the special straps or can I tie w/ the lead rope? How short or long should I tie them? Anything pertinent that I really need to know before going??

you can tie with the lead rope, it can range from how long you have it, some horses toss there head if its to loose and some do it if its to tight, it just depends on the horse

Pendin on the horse, we use leads but lots of people use trailer ties and what not and they tend to be safer....

If you've never tied before to trailer, why start now? If each section is divided, they should be just fine. In fact for a 5 hour haul, they may do better being able to move around. You might want to consider leg protection though.
