Trailering Horses ------RANT IN THE WORKS

Ok, I am going to have my fit here, so I don't kill the owners.

Just got back from cleaning my stall, too humid to really work today, so Blister gets today off.

When I get there, there are some people who trailered their horses up to the barn to ride. They had the SADDLES ON the horses for the trip.

RULE PEOPLE< DO NOT SADDLE YOUR HORSE THEN TRAILER THEM ANYWHERE. VERY VERY VERY VERY DANGEROUS. And not very comfy for your horse either.

HORSES ARE NOT SADDLE RACKS!!!

They ALSO had them fully bridled and tied WITH THE BRIDLES AND REINS.

Well, needless to say, we had a MESS. These were people who were NEW to horses supposively, and were told that this was OK.

Well, they now have 2 horses with BLOODY mouths, one horse busted the saddle on the trailer rails, the other one got his bridle STUCK over the horn and busted the bridle AND His mouth.

The one with the broken saddle busted the latigo during a FR EAK OUT moment when they hit a bump. Harmless bump they said. Guess not!

One of the horse's was under the canopy (trailer was a half canopy/half open trailer). The horse under it busted his head rearing up.

OMG I can't even imagion doing that with my horses, let alone SEE IT!!

Also, was a little pony who got the SNOT kicked out of him in the process. He busted his reins to get as far back in the trailer as he could, but probably got beat up before he got away. His nose was torn up and he had some bruising around his eye. Nice Horseshoe print on it. Poor thing. Too small to do anything.

Vet is out there taking care of the horses. Rarely does he make visits, but he happened to have come out and be there at the time they drove up. He was giving vaccs to another clients' horses at the time.

We BOTH were just in AWE more than anything at the situation.

I just can imagion how WORSE it COULD Have been. One horse could have gotten caught in the pony's saddle. Luckly the stirrups had the covers on the front of them.

Just GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HH

Sorry, had to do that. I just wanted to WACK the dang owners upside the head!!!

People almost always trailer their horses with saddles on around here. I guess I'd just never really thought about it.

Ohhh, covered stirrups, how special. I bet they had my favorite $.50 aluminum curb bit with a nylon head stall also. I can just picture it. Poor horses. I hope you or someone was there to give these horse owners(and I use that term lightly) an education. Are the horses going to be OK? Sorry you had to deal with all that. It makes for a totally upsetting day.

Dawn,

I have seen horses in trailers with saddles on before. Never actually knew anyone that did it. How dangerous can you get? That is just plain stupid!! More frequently you will see people tie their horses up with the reins. I don't know which is worse.

Well, now that I think about it, I realize how dumb it is. It's just that I've seen it my entire life, so never thought about it before. I've never done it, and I don't believe anyone I know's ever done it. Never seen one tied with the reins in a trailer though.

My goodness do I hate it when people trailer with their horses already tacked up! You see it every so often around here. AQHA1972, you summed it up quite nicely, LAZY

When I was leaving, the vet was giving them an ear full. They were GHOST WHITE when they saw the actual Damage. Hate to see them when they get the BILL!!! Probably pass out!!

From what I was there for, the vet gave them a once over, said NO RIDING for at least a month to let their mouth's heal up.

Their 8 yr old kid was DEVISTATED!! He wanted to ride SOOOO bad.

As for the pony, probably no riding for longer. His eye, from what I saw, was ok. But one never knows what damage happened inside the skull.

The one's poll was busted open, and I mean OPEN. Needs stitches and he wants to do an X-ray cause he thinks the horse might have chipped the bone. He's lucky to be alive. Vet said he is VERY suprised himself considering horses that bust their head THAT hard, usually end up dropping dead. AND he did tell the owners that.

I think the vet is going to scare them straight. He has no patience for **** like that. And that is what it is, ****.

They seemed like nice people, just IGNORANT!!! I left them my name and number and said if they need any help or advice, to just give me a ring. I doubt they will call me, but one never knows.

That is just awful! I have seen ppl load their horses tacked up (see it alot at rodeos) and I agree it is just plain LAZY. It annoys me when I see westerns and they tie their horses up with the reins because that is where the newbs see it done and assume that is the correct way. I am glad that nothing to serious happened( as in dead horse) and now the owners know and wont do anything like that again. IF nothing had happened the owners would have continued to do it and probably would have ended up with a dead horse. Glad the vet doesnt sit back and ignore when someone acts stupid.
