Is tobiano the only gene at work here? Odd socks and markings

My niece and I have been wondering about her tobiano mare's markings. Her dam is a plain bay TB and her sire is a black tobiano WB by Hall of Fame.

She has some roaning on her rear and her socks are jagged. Is this cause by the tobiano gene or is there something else at work?

Tobiano's can have overo "patterns" at work. Which because her socks are jagged like that, It looks like she has one of them. I'm not a color expert or anything just 2cents of what I've heard/know.

Stockings are jagged towards the back, typical of tobiano.

The roaning is not typical. Another thing to keep in mind is tobiano alone WILL NOT put white on the face.

Definitely sabino at work. And a suppressor gene. :-)

That LF is cool! My neighbor had a SSH foal born a few years ago who had a similarly marked foot (LF at that) - almost like he had black socks on over his white sock

Who exactly is the sire? HOF himself is Tobi + Sabino. I ask because I almost wonder if Frame could be involved here, having a suppressing effect on the legs in particular.

There is no frame in Warmbloods and very, very little in TBs. She called dam "plain" anyway (not that that rules it out).

I have seen this type of suppression happen on non frames... and ESPECIALLY on Thoroughbreds. Dam is "plain"? I'll bet anything she carries a suppression gene and passed to this foal. Foal would have been much louder without it (more body white too). I have seen this ssuppression be pretty heavy in certain lines of TBs. It's interesting to cross those lines with the "loud" lines. Alot of WEIRD markings result.

She said the sire is a "black tobiano WB by Hall of Fame", which can mean anything from a "pure" WB to a Paint/WB cross, which is why I was looking for that side of things

To answer some questions ...

Her sire is Hero Bound by Hall of Fame o/o Sidewalk Suzie (black/brown TB). I tested Hero Bound's color he came back EE aa.

Here's his website with pics of him - http://sites.onlinemac.com/K9equine

Her dam is a bay TB who never got her JC papers so I guess technically who knows what she is. You can see her dam here http://rosewoodstables.com/broodmares.html

.................................................. ............

acc - what do you mean by suppression gene? Do you mean that she is carrying a hidden gene that is restricting the tobiano from expressing itself?

Hmmm ... this will be interesting as she is in-foal to my bay silver QH stallion and is due any day.

To answer for ACC I beleive yes that is exactly what she means. Your mare probably has a gene that will limit white expression.
