If we could see a picture to see what his color looks like it would help us to give you better advice. I have a grey horse so I have never used "darkening" shampoos before, only whitening..I am not sure that they help very much. Someone else might be able to give you more input there. Personally I think that as long as your horse is clean and well groomed his natural color and shiny coat will look great nomater what shade he is. If I were you I would concentrate on doing the best grooming/ clipping I could..that will make him look better than anything else.. lindsey

With Rocket, who is a dark bay, with lighter spots around his muzzle and flanks, I shampoo regularly about 2 weeks before a show. If you're really that worried about how much the light color will show up, I'd get a bay colored hairspray for horses. If you look around some, I'm sure you'll find something that'll match his coat color. I can find a website and give you the link for some. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. All horses are different and are almost always imperfect.

Ive found that the colored enhancing sprays are extremely fake looking, and hard to match w/ your horse. If I were you, I would use Quic Color, which really makes bay horses gleam! I use Quic color on my red dun, and I used to use it on my bay that I had when I first started showing. It really made her color stand out.

What's in these "colour enhancer" shampoos - dyes? Do they dry out the coat eventually? I would prefer a good nutrition/grooming program with a premium grade horse shampoo thats not going to strip my horses coat of natural oils. Look quality ingredients such as oats or a Canadian brand called FlaxSheen - its made with flaxseed. These ingredients can promote shine because the moisturized hair will lay flatter and reflect light better therefore shine more. |
