i raoched my horses mane because he was rubbing it off and we could not braid it for the show...the problem i had with roaching is: I HAVE NOTHING TO HOLD ONTO WHEN I RIDE HIM BAREBACK! lol but he had dandruff too he might have scurf(correct me if that is not what it is called) but scurf is like a moled or something in the horses mane...if nothing else works your vet might have something for it.

I say not to roach, because I really hate the look of roached manes, but if it makes your horse more comfortable, and/or you don't want to deal with dandruff, go ahead and roach!

Talking

Just to note on a few things brought up in other replies, the time it takes for the mane to grow back varies greatly from horse to horse. I roached 2 horses on the same day back in February, and even though they're both on the same diet and get the same attention, my horse's mane is now about 5-6 inches long, and my friend's horse is just now starting to "flop over." And as for having something to hold onto while riding bareback, we always leave a patch of hair about 4-5 inches at the withers so you do have something there. So really, the only thing holding you back is wether or not you like the look of it, I guess.

This is a bad picture, but it's the only one I could find that shows the whole neck from a good angle. I did shave a little too far down, so the patch on the withers is a little shorter than I like.
