To pull or not to pull...

So while Cat is recuperating from being lame from a soft tissue injury in her knee (vet says I can slowly ride again in December), I am thinking about pulling her mane.

When I first got Cat (5 years ago), her mane looked horrible. Another horse in her pasture I guess had been "eating" it because there were chunks missing throughout it. My cousin roached her mane to try and get it to grow back normally. It has taken 5 years for her mane to grow back and look nice again.

I plan to compete more with her next year and will most likely be doing a some western pleasure classes and English flat classes in a local "higher" level schooling show circuit.

So... should I go ahead and pull the mane that has taken SO long to grow out or just leave it.

Pictures about 4ish months after my cousin roached her mane:

Pictures of her now:

(before her massive weight loss program)

In August before she went lame:

From a local low level show in August (she was gradually getting worse lameness-wise here):

Thanks!

Even though I think a short mane looks gret for english dicipines, I'm a big fan of long manes and it looks very pretty on your girl. On her, I personally would leave them long! ;-)

I think she looks amazing with a long mane. You said you were just doing schooling shows... and wow theres everything from jeans and a t-shirt to you-can-tell-it-took-hours braids. So you'll be fine.

you need to pull her mane if you are competing at all. it gives the polished look and it shows that you are serious about showing. plus, when you go to pull it again right before the show it will be quicker. don't forget to thin it out before you pull it.

i'd say leave it....it looks great and it is not required for local shows that a mane be pulled......she looks better with it long and I think it shows her off personally

I think she's gorgeous with that long mane. Don't pull it if you don't have to!

This is a "higher" up schooling show though. The show pic I have was from one of the jean-type of schooling shows, but we have pretty much out grown it. The circuit I will probably do thinks that they are an "A" rated show, but without the actual rating...

Here are the types of horses that we would be competing against:

English:
Rolling Hills Saddle Club
(they have "casual" wear during the miserable summer months) HJHPhotography/RollingHillsSaddleClubJune - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Western:
Rolling Hills Saddle Club

Thanks!

Awe, but she looks so cute with it long! I'd say maybe not pull it short short, but pull it where it's really long in the middle, so it's more of a mid length instead of medium long medium. like this horse: taken off one of the websites posted.

I noticed that the horses on the site you posted have unbraided manes. I'm sure the judges would appreciate a nicely braided long mane than an unbraided pulled one. She is a lovely color BTW!
