To Geld, Or Not To Geld?

I have a miniature stallion who can be registered with the WCMHR.

He's great and has a calmer teperment than all of my horse, except my fat mini donkey.

He was broke to drive, and is doing well in his training.

should I geld him?

the question really is -> what does he have that no other mini can offer?

does "he can be registered" mean you'd register him w/ his lineage or hardship him? because very few people will want to breed with a stallion whom has no known background to base off of.

If you're asking the question, then yes, you should geld him

None of the reasons you listed are any good reason, in and of themselves, or even all together, to keep him a stallion.

Now if you said, in addition to what you already listed, that his conformation is great and he's got rare (but good) bloodlines and you have the time and money to show him and promote him as a stallion, and have the time and facilities to keep him as a stallion, then MAYBE you should keep him intact.

As many people say.. A good stallion will make a outstanding gelding.

From what I have seen, it is not worth it to keep most horses stallions unless you are serious about showing them off and breeding to improve the breed. It is more hassel than it is worth

The question should not be, should I geld him? But rather, why should he be left a stallion? What does he offer? Am I going to show him, promote him and do I want to spend the money on the facilities to breed mares? Do I have that much money and time? It costs approximately $10 000 to train, show and promote a stallion properly until they're an age appropriate for breeding. That doesn't include facility costs to upgrade to barn and stable area appropriate for breeding.

Umm I have a barn.

YEs Im going to show him.

And we're talking about minis - they cost 1/10 of what a full size horse costs.

well what do you want from him?
do you want to show him as a stallion?

do you want him to get a good rep an then use him for breeding??

do you want to use him for breeding yourself??

Can you post pics of him?
And to answer your question...for all the reasons listed above... yes.

I dont have any good pics of him right now. I will try to get some pics of him soon. I need to shave him. My oh-so-great Wahl clippers are near death.

but heres the best pic I have of him - feels ashamed - its been cold lol

He's skinnier now too. Like I said; he looks like junk in this pic. His legs aren't that thick, theyre nice and fine boned. Meh. I need clippers
