Well, everyone has put the fear of God into me! The issue about getting a pony cheaper by buying it...well, a good reliable pony around here is anywhere between A$2000 - 3000 if not more. Not exactly pocket money, especially if you have a non horsey spouse who has a heart attack every time you want to buy a horse. Seriously though perhaps it is correct to say that if I have to ask whether I can breed a mare I am probably the kind of person who shouldn't do it. My reason for asking is that I have always loved horses. Due to circumstances I was never able to learn to ride or own my own horse. Fortunately for me this changed about three years ago and I now have 2.5 (the .5 being the naughty pony) beautiful horses who have given me hours and hours of pleasure. Over those years (that must seem very little to the luck people who grew up with horses) I have read up and talked to people about every conceivable topic on horses. I am some kind of a sponge. Why would I ask about breeding? Well, not just because she is a mare but because I love horses and everything to do with them (how corny!) What they eat, how they look, what they can do, to ride, to learn more about training and I guess breeding was a logical expansion to my obsession. Anyway, it was more an educational question than an actual decision to breed.

It is great to love horses like that, and I can assure you it is not as rare of a feeling as you might think.

Stay away from breeding until you are ready and financially able to buy a quality breeding mare and pay for a good stallion- if you do truly love horses that strongly you will do your best for them, and that is it

Well said....I just put in $5000+ in a newborn filly that I did not breed (given to us) because the owner didn't want to take on the responsibility of her after she became an orphan and ended up very ill. So saying that all goes well you may get off with just the breeding fee and up keep of the mare. But when things go wrong they can go terribly wrong and very quickly and the cost can be enormous!

The distinction is a good, reliable pony. If you breed for a foal you could spend $2000 -$3000 and still not get a good, reliable pony.
It is safer and you are money ahead to bet your money on a known entity (a good, reliable pony).

Congratulations on finally being able to have horses after wanting them so bad for so long.
You are living the dream
