Whoa... what?

People actually do that?

I had no idea. I wouldn't, personally... although I suppose you COULD... I've seen how badly dyes can fry your hair (although mine's gotten rather good at staying healthy through it all) and would hate to do that to my horse's tail.

My friend used lady clairol, buy her horse was a dark bay, and she only dyed the last 12 inches of his tail, where it was sun bleached....Cathy

Huh... learn something new every day! I would've been hesitant to use something not specifically made for horse hair.

What about putting some vaseline on his rump and down the backs of his legs where the tail could come into contact with him while it "sets"? That might help.

Never heard of anyone actually doing this. But be careful of "swishing" during the process or you may end up showing a homemade appy.

perhaps putting the dye in a deep bucket,
my dad bleaches all the white horses tails that he has had, not sure how he goes about it but it works well, also, maybe if you use a little bit of the dye at a time so it isnt drenched if he swishes, i hope this helps

I dyes my horses tail black once (it is pretty dark to begin with and my trainer wanted to see what it would look like) and i wrapped her back legs with polo's all the way up her hocks. I got hair dye for african americans and followed the directions. You have to leave it in a little longer then it says, but it worked pretty well I think the dye was called Dark and Lovely

yep, put some vaseline around the tail area before you apply any dye, in case you get sloppy. And when you get to the step where you leave the dye to set, put the tail in some sort of plastic bag (make sure the horse isn't going to freak out about a bag tied to it's butt ) so that if they swish the tail, they don't end up with streaks on their body.

We just use normal run of the mill Clairol. But we don't get black - we get a very dark brown. The jet black can sometimes be too intense and looks unnatural.

I have been unable to bleach/dye my mares tail white where it has gone browny yellow at the ends. I've tried hair bleach, toilet bleach, washing powder and vanish stain remover. Nowt works. Anyone else managed to do this?
