We are dying daisy's mane and tail this year to give it more condition. Dying it puts moisture back into the hair for those of you who dont know, and bleaching takes it out. My main tip- get those alligator clips that hairdressers use to clip the hair up and prevent it from touching the body. Im lucky because my mom has tons from back when she used to hairdress, but im assuming they are pretty cheap at the loonie store and such Good luck!

For the person who has problems with a yellow/dirty tail on the bottom - as the tail gets longer, the bottom hairs die. When hair dies, it turns a yellowish color.

Isn't the hair ALL dead ( I mean the whole shaft part) except for the root under the skin? I'd be willing to say that the yellow ends are because that part is the oldest...what do you think Jess?

To the person with the hairs that are yellow at the end, have you tried using laundry bluing? You have to be very careful about not using too much or else it will turn the hair blue, but it really works so great on white to really make it shine. Bleach (true bleach) eventually makes things turn yellowish as well (I over bleached some underwear once... it wasn't white anymore... Long story...) if you use too much or too long. You might try cutting off the yellowish parts and allowing the hair to grow in more healthy making sure you braid it and bag it so it doesnt get dirty.

Dying doesn't always put moisture back. If you really want to help the condition of the mane and tail I would use hot oil, or every week use a deep conditioning treatment. Also the alligator clips will really help well if you clip it up section by section, and make sure that none of the ends can whip around if they swish their tail, (they could swish their tail and they could fall out) and they will help keep what you don't want to die up and out of the way. (I use these clips when I am combing through the tail also, or when I am braiding in a fake tail) So I would still use a bag, or an old tail bag to protect his body from the ends of his tail.

At the barn that I used to work, and train at, they died the tail of this dapple gray, and they died it black (they used really dark brown) I didn't see her use anything like vaseline (great idea) but she did put it in a plastic bag. I guess how you do it really depends on the horse, cause she just let him stand there with the bag on the end of the tail. Don't forget gloves for yourself!!! (she used the heavy duty rubber bathroom cleaning ones.)

As for the white tail, my cremello mare, the ends of her tail get really yellowy, and sometimes orangy because she pees in her tail, the only way I could get it to lighten was to wash it every other day, and slightly trim the ends every few weeks. This helped tons, and in a month or so it was loads better.

most people I know who used Bleach products to clean their white tails ended up losing their horses tail. It fell out.

I use hair dye as well and then follow up with course hair (human) coconut conditioner. Braid the tail and then rinse the next day.

I also use for white tails the ladies(our elders use) leave in for white hair. It is blue in the bottle. I buy it from Walmart comes ina pink bottle with a grey or silver top I believe. Dont remember the name but use it for socks/stockings and tails. always brings the shine out and helps get rid of the dinge..

I have also used horse dye on my horses you sponge it on in sections. time consuming but does help with a dark sunbleached horse.. Only used for bays/dk bays/sorrels/

Dying actually does put moisture back in if done in proper amounts. If it doesnt, then it was either overdone or not left long enough. Its the same with human hair. And yes, alligator clips should be done in sections, i figured that was a given Ive always used them for mane/tail dying, and plus they are super cheap so it doesnt matter if some get broken.

I was told (never done it myself though) that when you dye a tail
open a 50 gallon black trash bag and cut a hole in it just big enough for the tail to go through and put the bag over your horses rump and back legs with the tail sticking through the hole. Then when you are done putting the color on to wrap the tail up and tie it in another trash bag until it is time to rinse.
