Tip Submitted By If your horse bucks hold their head up, they cannot buck then. ![]() Tip : When you are going to show a mare and foal together, put the same bridles on both as they will look more alike and the judges prefer them like that, and keep them together! ![]() ![]() Stacie Lipscombe Tip 1: When you have a new foal, stroke its belly when it it drinking its mothers milk, and it will digest it more easily! Tip 2: If you're preparing a white horse for a show, wipe a KFC wipe over their dirty patches and it will come off without getting wet! Tip 3: If you want to make your horse's feet gleam, rub off the dried black dirt and apply some sunflower oil overnight, cheap, and good for the feet! Tip 4: When making a horse's food, add some table salt, some lard, and a bit of human-garlic, and he will enjoy it more and digest it easier! Submitted by Ponymad333StacieIf you want to wear a body protector in a show but don't want it over your jacket then invest in a stock bib or get a big shirt and tie. Wear a normal t-shirt, then a body protector, then a stock bib or shirt and tie over it, then a jacket. In winter you can wear a jumper under the body protector as well. KateTo open a hay/straw bale without using scissors or a knife, get a sharp flint, a spade or another bit of baler twine. Hold the twine around the bale up and saw at it with the shovel end or flint or loop the baler twine through, pull up tight and saw at it. KateIf your horse is scared of having its mane combed or pulled, like mine is. What I do is I get hold of her head-collar, stroke her cheek and talk to her. And she's fine , she just stands there for me. PodgeeI live in Australia and in Summer it is often too hot to rug your horse, but for some horses mosquito bites can be a big problem. Some horses seem to be more prone to them than others, and they can be quite irritating for them. To fix this simply buy a container of roll on insect repellent. (Spray on can often scare your horse.) It is very cheap and you only need to put on a little bit. One clean line on their Neck, Body and Rump, and one line down each or their legs is sufficient. Before you apply the insect repellent to your horse be sure to apply a line about 5cm long just on their shoulder. Leave it for about 15 minutes. If a welt appears do not apply anymore repellent. It means that your horse is allergic to it. If your horse is allergic to it, or you want to rug your horse, you can put spray on or roll on insect repellent on your horses rugs. JessicaWhen you are being judged at a horse show remember to smile. It makes all the difference in the world to the judges. I have had judges come up to me many times before telling me "It was nice to see a smile, it really helped you place". So good luck, and remember "Smile all the way around and you will always win the crown" (That is what I have my parents tell me when I show) ...so go show those pearly whites off!! DeanneWhen trimming your horses legs use a mane comb to push up the hair and then trim it. Also when trimming a tail hold it and wrap the end round your horses leg to get the right length. Michelle 13. If you have a horse/pony that rears like mine, take a egg in your hand when your riding and when your horse goes up, smash it on the top of your horses head so that it cracks. So the horse will think that it has hurt its head and wont go up again. It has worked with both my horses and they haven't gone up for 2 years now. RiaIf you're nervous before going into a show ring- drink camomile tea!! It has a good calming effect. And if you let a tense pony sniff it they will start to relax. If you curve your hand like a claw and gently rub the pony's tense area in circles this should calm them down. If they don't like it one way, go another way, and keep changing areas. Give it a try!! JoWith prices of everything shooting up here's a recipe for hoof oil that will keep your pockets full!!! Melt 250g of lard and 500g- cooking oil in a pan. Allow to cool then pour into a jar and cover. VOILA!! Alison If your horses tail is wispy then wash it and while it is still wet plait the end of the tail and secure the end with an elastic band. when the tail is dry, unplait it and comb through with your fingers. This will give it a slightly wavy and thicker appearance!!!!! Also to keep a tail out of the way whilst you are trimming up or bandaging the hind legs, tie a knot in the end of the tail!!!!!! Emma When trying to give your pony that extra shine use furniture polish. Harmless to your horse but cheap and easy to use. Just spray onto an old cloth (so it doesn't frighten the horse) and wipe on. Wahey one shiny horse!Micheal(Tip one.) When you have washed your horses tail dry them off and then spray in Mr Sheen (The furniture cleaner.) It keeps the tail tangle free all the way to shows or just for general use. Mr Sheen is cheaper than all these canter, mane and tail conditioners . (Tip two.) Another way of keeping your horses tail tangle free is to brush it and then put Johnson's Baby Oil on your hands and rub it into the tail but don't do this to often or the tail will go quite greasy. Ruth age 13 My tip is........ for a cheap bridle hook you can make them from using old saddle soap tins!!!! SUSAN MACBAIN To bring up a really good shine on your riding boots just wipe some plain and simple washing up liquid over them and leave them for a while and your boots will come out lovely and shiny. Laura age 13 If tour horse doesn't like water, get a hose pipe and switch it on very lightly show the water + hose too the horse, then spray it on the hooves and slowly work your way up. Thanks for your time. Bye,worked for me!!!. R Morris When you pony comes in covered in dry hard mud, use a plastic pot scrubber to remove it. Kathryn age 10 If you have a bar of glycerine saddle soap, melt it with a pint of milk. Pour it into a tub and leave it to set. you get a softer grease like substance and your tack will gleam! and the soap lasts longer too! Sarah Does washing numnahs and girths leave your washer full of hairs? If so vacuum clean the offending articles before washing and this will get rid of most of the hairs. If items are still hairy place them in an old pillow case before washing and your washer will stay hair free. Jo IF YOU'RE LOOKING TO BUY OR LOAN A PONY TO COMPETE, DEFINITELY GET AN OLDER PONY/ HORSE AS THEY ARE SENSIBLE AND BETTER AND MORE EXPERIENCED JUMPERS AND SHOWERS! Karen If your horse or pony is the ultimate fussy eater when it comes to worming granules take these 4 steps and worry no more !!! 1. clean your pony's feed bucket with sponge and water, no pony likes to eat out of a trash can! 2. put in your normal feed 3. crush up 5 or 6 polos into fine dust and mix with the feed (no pony can resist this! ) 4. cut up some carrots or apples into strips and put that into the feed and make sure it is well mixed now feed to the pony. Arron To save money, save all the left over bits of saddle soap, mould them together and put them in the fridge, the result will be a nice, big ball of saddle soap. Berni If you have a fit pony which has a habit if rearing and bucking with you, let him out in the paddock before you ride him, so he can get all his messing around over with, without chucking you off. After that, he should be fine. Lorna B-Age 10 A good way to bond with a horse is to give him a good groom. He'll become confident with you being around him and most horses enjoy a good groom. C_Tulloch_Orth@compuserve.com If you have run out of hoof oil use vegetable oil instead - its cheap and does exactly the same job. To stop hoof oil from your hoof oil brush leaking into your tack box, either invest in a plastic hoof oil container with a built in brush, or tape a clear sandwich bag around the brush, or buy a brush with a cap. Wash all grooming kit weekly but do not use warm water because this will rot wood-based brushes. In summer always use sun lotion on horses with pink or white muzzles, and if they get a bit wrinkly and scabby put a dab of Vaseline on and rub it in. If your pony needs conditioning a bit, make your own mane and tail conditioner by mixing baby oil, hair conditioner and water, then place in a spray bottle and squirt away!. Kelly Bowers A few stalks of elder stuck through the browband will help to keep flies away while you are riding. Rosie Southgate Whitening Don't you just hate having to remove stains from your ponies coat and tail? Well take my advice and... For tails... Rub chalk into your ponies tail for a stunning gleam. For coats... Mix together talc and water and apply to stable stains for a white shine. Lucy , age 12 After pulling your horses mane rub neck were you pulled it at. I know it does not really hurt them when you pull, but for a skittish horse, it helps!
