Timothy Hay

Is Timothy good for both ponies and horses? Young and old?
I would like to feed just 1 type of hay to everyone, and need to know if there are any reasons not to feed it! Besides cost

We have a friend that feeds timothy to his mules along with oat hay. They all are pretty chunky to me but that might be the oat hay. I don't have access to lots of timothy so am not a expert be any means but I don't think it will put alot of weight on your horses. It should be ok for ponies, we have one and have occassionally feed him timothy with the others no problems but again, I don't feed it regularly enough to know. Sorry, I hope I helped alittle.

Thank you for your input!

I would like to simplify and feed 1 hay to everybody, if it can work with everyone healthy and happy!
It would be more expensive than feeding a local hay, but I like the texture of the timothy better and it seems like a more "all around" type hay??

Do you have access to a mixture of bermuda and alfafa? That is what I prefer to feed, it is a little more than just alfafa but when I want to put weight on both young and old and give it to the pony who likes to colic, that is what I use. I just don't get to buy it very often around here. What did the feed store tell you about the timothy? They may be able to let you know for certain if it is ok to feed on a regular basis to all your horses.

Im not necessarily looking for a weight gain hay, just a hay to feed everyone Something to keep in front of them most of the time, to prevent colic, boredom and such!
I will add Rice bran in the winter to those who have trouble with weight!

Timothy is one of the better mineral-balanced hays out there. It's also one that's harder to get cut at the right time. Good Timothy is an excellent hay. Not cut right, many horses won't touch it.

Timothy is fine for both ponies and horses. My boy has been on it for about 7 years and does great on it. It isn't a hay that will put weight on like say alfalfa but it's more nutritional than bermuda or orchard(imo).
