I don't have any experience, but I know there was a recent study where tildren was used to treat navicular bone inflammation and that it showd promising results in conjunction with appropriate shoeing.

Smile Gallium Nitrate

I have had no personal experience with Tildren but understand that it is drug that requires IV infusion, does not show any effect for about 8 weeks and appears not to last more than 8 months or so although there have been dramatic results in some horses.

I have had experience with Gallium Nitrate! My 17 hand gelding had been unsound for more than 5 years inspite of all the usual drugs and corrective shoeing. I had about decided that euthanasia was what was best for him when I happened on an abstract on Gallium Nitrate. I decided it was worth a try as it was non invasive and results or not could be noted in 2 to 4 weeks.

I started him on the loading dose on July 12, 2008 and he was completely sound in the field in one week; we started riding him again, very lightly, (he is a dressage horse) about one week later. He is now working 35 minutes a day (as of 9/20/08) at all gaits and is COMPLETELY sound; he went to a clinic where the clinician was very impressed with him; he will begin showing in October. He will remain on the full dose until October 10th when I will reduce the dose by half.

This product is not inexpensive but I doubt it is as expensive as Tildren and is only mixed in water to a 1% solution and poured over the grain twice a day; I have had no problem as all with his eating it; it is no more expensive than Cosequin or Adequan and IT WORKS. I have now placed my young jumper on it in the maintenance dose as a prophalactic measure and plan to start another mare on it who has some arthritic problems.

Gallium Nitrate apparently is considered by most veterinarians as an 'alternative medicine' substance or merely in the same class as herbal supplements and they don't consider it as an option. My vet is fine with it (as it obviously works) and the vet who diagnosed my horse with navicular said he had heard of it and if it worked to continue using it. He didn't, however, give me the impression that he would recommend it as an option.

My feeling is that this is a supplement that is non invasive and has been shown to be effective in almost all of the horses tried on it with none getting any worse or having adverse side effects. If you have tried everything else to no avail please, for your horse's sake, give it a try.

My vet (were in Canada) doesnt recomend it (at least in my geldings case) mostly due to the cost, since there are alternative treatments here that are far less costly & (in his opinion) more effective.
My boy has been diagnosed with Navicular.

He added that the test results were not as positive per cost as other options available.

I've never used it on my personal horses. But my trainer/boss recommends it. She's used it on several of the schoolies with great results. For the most part it was to help various degrees of arthritis and it did seem to help a lot. The usefulness of the schoolies has extended a lot. We are also considering trying it on one of the horses I take care of. But the owner isn't sure about the expense of something that is really still being tested.

I'm also pretty sure an HGS member has her horse in a Tildren trial right now. I believe it is HUS_WP_lovr and her horse Jackson. I'm too lazy to search at the moment but I think I'm remembering he has navicular.

Yes, my horse is in a study for it. JumptheMoon, you've posted in my threads so you know.

Though I have not seen results yet I do know that in this paticular study it has been very difficult for horses to get in. They are being quite strict.

My horse had the drug about 4 weeks ago.

Also, in my experience my horse colicked with the dose.I was told this is a common side affect. Not that its relevant but as we all know with colic, the simplest case can turn ugly and kill.

My boy also has hock pain which is believed to be arthrits at this point. The vet doing this study has not said anything about the Tildren possibly helping the arthritis, she only suggested hock injections.

But, then again, she is in this study to look at the affects it has on navicular disease so that may be why she didnt mention it.

Even More discouraged with Jackson:(

So discouraged with Jackson

Jackson Updates 10 days Post Drug
The shoes they did after the drug was administered as a part of the study.

Jackson's back from Vet! *BIG News*

Wow! Great news about Jackson!!!!

i have heard some good results from it, but it depends on what type of navicular your horse has. I spoke to my vet about it, as he is a wordly known navicular specialist. He said in my geldings case (some small changes, but mostly his problem is an adhered DFT) it wouldn't help.

This is a really old thread.

I did pay the big bucks to get my horse a doze of Tildren to treat his age related wear and tear hock arthritis last summer. In the short term, I was pretty disappointed with the lack of any noticeable improvement. After six-12 months he flexes sound on both hocks. Also after this thread was made in June 2007, we moved him to a different barn with daily turnout. He also has a different farrier which has made a world of difference with his soundness.

My Arabian horse (9 years old) has been treated 2 times with Tildren. He got his first Tildren july 2007 and his second one March 2008. He had spavin (early phase). Last week I went with him for a check up (every 6 month) and the x-rays showed that the spavin is totally gone.
So, my experience with Tildren is a very good one.
Because his age
