Thorough Grooming

I've seen it a lot where people think that they need to brush out their horses often. If you just ride every now and then, please, don't do this.
I just groom my horses back and girth area before I ride, and remove clumps of dirt. Otherwise, I leave him dusty.

It is UNHEALTHY for a pastured horse to be thoroughly groomed. It removes important oils in the coat.
Yes, it does distribute the oils, but it removes them more than it distributes them.

If your horse is stalled and/or blanketed, it's a different story. But if he is outside most of the time, please, don't thoroughly groom him that often.

If anyone has any other thoughts on this, please...post. Don't be shy.

i agree the oils help water proof the horses coat when its outside if the horses here are out for more than 6hrs a day we leave them dusty and mucky..less mantance for you and better for your horse what else could you ask for??

I think it depends on whether or not your horse is rugged.

I keep mine in pipe stalls. I knock any mud off them. Brush their backs and go.

If necessary and if it is warm enough I will rinse sweat marks away with water only.

My horse is in a outdoor stall, I groom her befor a ride and if neccisary (sp?) Spray down the saddle area. She is healthy and everyone comment on how shiny her coat is.
