Assuming that's about 80 miles, that's 120.00 just for hauling It doesn't cost me that in fuel to a show round trip of 240 miles. I already don't like your trainer

Wow. Even the high end cutters around here don't charge that much for a haul!
I would be pretty upset if I were you.

I dont know what you pay for training but around here its $500 - $700/month, board included! That's insane.. mind you I live in a small town in northern BC Canada.. no money for horses up here.

Had to highlight a very important word. I think you may have been taken advantage of.

The highest priced cutter in CA is 1400 a month. Most are more around 1000 a month or less.
Show fees and lessons and all that can raise it up.

Was your horse IN TRAINING or was it just boarded at the trainer's for 2 weeks for you to take lessons?
What kind of showing are you doing?

Didn't you find out her prices first? If you agreed to them - I don't see what you can do.

That seems pretty darn steep to me! My trainer charges a rate for the training board each month. When we go to a show, he charges $45 for show prep bathing/clipping (unless you do it yourself), then charges a flat rate of $150 to haul to the show, the day fee for each day you show is $45 which consists of coaching/getting the horse ready etc, we also split the cost of a tack stall, and if he stays at a hotel that cost is split with the clients. However he stays in a client's camper so there is no charge. All that still comes out to less than what your trainer charges! A friend of mine used to show ASB's and was charged for overnight stall watch....LOL.

I would definitely go over your bill with your trainer.

Definitely ask for the bill to be itemized.

Were lessons included in the training? If not, what does your trainer usually charge. What is the day fee for shows? I would bet that those two things are the bulk of the "extra" charges.

In the future, always ask about hauling fees, day fees, etc... before you incur the charges. Most trainers are very fair about those and will be able to tell you exactly what kind of expense you're looking at before the service is provided.

Here's what she charged me:

Horse Transportation (6/19-6/21) Horse On Course Horse Show: 142.50
3 Horse Show Coaching: 240.00
Motel Charge (all four of us in one room): 150.00
Clipping (I clipped EVERYTHING except for two legs that she did, and I didn't even ask her to): 25.00
One Hour Lesson: 50.00
4 Half-Hour Lessons: 150.00
Supplements (that I did not ask her to give): 15.00
Board for the Two Weeks: 272.00

Naturally I decided to bring him home, and that cost me 48.00. We live less than 15 miles away.

Grand Total came to $1,140.50
