Basically to keep the mane looking neat and tidy. Some horses have parts of the mane that are too thick, making the hair stand up, or they have one part of their mane is very thick and the other part is very thin. By thining the mane you can make it look more streamlined throughout.

Also, if you show and have to braid your horse's mane, it's got to be the right length and thickness for the kind of braids you're expected to have. For english dressage braids, you need a very short, fairly thin mane to get tidy looking braids.

My whine for the day: I could only locate ONE PAIR or thinning shears in this little hick town of mine and they are $25.00!!!! Sheesh...

I did it! I did it!!! And the $25 thinning shears were totally worth it! My friend saw Griffin after I finished and thought I had pulled his mane - which of course, I did NOT. It took me about 20 minutes to do the whole job (as opposed to several days to pull it). I'll attach before and after pics, but they didn't come out very well because the sun was too bright.

THANKS HOLLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
