DIARY OF A STARVED MINIATURE HORSE

The Story of "Jack" - The Starved Miniature Horse

BEFORE

*WARNING*

GRAPHIC PHOTOS OF A STARVED MINIATURE HORSE

The Miniature Horse pictured and discussed in this story was not a CMHR rescue. His photos and story are posted here as an illustration of a starved Miniature Horse. The breeder of this colt kindly donated his photos so others can benefit from her experience.

As a reputable breeder, she sold her colt(see before photo above) to what she assumed was a good home. She offered the new owners assistance and advice but after eight months the buyers defaulted on their payments. Her beloved colt was returned in the below depicted state.

AFTER

Notice the pot belly, rough coat, dull eyes and bones protruding on back and hips. Many people wrongly assume a pot belly indicates an overweight horse and cut their food back. A pot belly can be an indication of severe malnutrition, or a heavy parasite load - veterinarian advise should be sought.

(Jack, back home and on his way to recovery)
This demonstrates how quickly a horse can go from top condition to a state of starvation in a relatively short time. Fortunately this Mini is on the road to recovery, with the hope that no permanent damage has occurred.
