Thin Mane that Needs-a-Pullin

Penny has a rediculously long mane right now - it's not very flattering and it gets very sweaty under there.

With Ed, my WB I have no problem pulling his mane since it is thick.

Penny's mane doesn't need the thinning effect of pulling, nor does she like it. For some reason, if you pull her mane, she resists heavily and may even rear. She has always done this in the period of time that I have owned her.

Is there a way to make her may shorter without causing her too much stress or making it too thin? I have tried the scizzor mane pullers - she is a little better, but still may stand up a little.

I have seen scizzors jobs and they generally look kind of... well... awful. Very choppy and just plain yuck. Maybe there is a way to do a good scizzor job?

All help is greatly appreciated!

I have a pair of thinning sissors (SP?) that I used to use on my gelding that did not like his mane pulled, you can just make small cuts, going across the mane, it should shorten it, but not thin it from the crest....sorta like cutting it even, but the thinning sissors, leave it looking like it was pulled....Cathy

Don't pull it. Don't thinning scissor it. Just scissor it.
What I do is just chop it straight across. Then I take the scissors on an angle and cut into the hair to make it look more natural and less chopped.
Voila, presentable mane.

I do pretty much what Zorse does- cut it to the length I want, then I cut vertically into the mane to take little snips out to make it more natural looking.

I would scissor it, so many are against it, but in all honestly when done right it does look presentable. I agree scissor it, and then cut vertically to make it more natural looking. Or if you do use the thinning shears to cut it across, it should work if you want to be more cautious about it, it may take awhile, but it should avoid the blunt cut look.

Remove the blade from your clippers and shorten the mane by running the blade from underneath and cut the length. My guy has a thin mane as well as this is how my trainer showed me how to shorten without thinning..

I use a solocomb. Gives the same look as traditional pulling but without the pain and is much quicker than pulling. If you're not familiar with them, you can find a description on the Internet. I'm not sure what you were referring to when you said that you had tried the scissor mane pullers, but check out the solocomb. If your horse will allow you to use scissors, you will have no problem using the solocomb.
