they're making him bleed

the flies are so bad, these horseflies come when my horse is grazing, and they make him bleed! he has blood spots on his coat! what can I do because i know they're really hurting him. i put fly spray on but it doesn't do anything. it works for literally 10 minutes and then its worn off

Try Swat bug ointment and repellent...its very thick and goopy....so it can protect them for a good long time.... apply daily. Also, I would suggest getting him a fly mask.

You can also try a fly sheet(the ones with the belly band are useful if you notice flies congregating along your horse's midline)fly leg wraps, and even an attachment for the neck depending on where the flies seem to be the worst. You may want to try switching fly sprays if the one you are using isnt affording any relief at all. Good Luck! The flies are terrible here this year also.

Be careful with the leg fly wraps...we found that they can cause bad rubbing and rain rot from the sweating...just check them daily if you use them...

Thanks for the heads up CGU--have not used them myself, but know people who like and use them.

Change Fly Spray. I highly recommend pyranha. I use it when I feed, they are usually good when I go back out to feed in the evening.

Fly Sheets work ok, but the legs are exposed. careful with the fly sheet leggings like CowGirlUp said. I've been hearing of leg issues with them too.

Good Luck.

OH, also, after you ride, and if you rince off, LET THE HOSRE roll and DON"T BRUSH BACK OFF> Leave the dirt. Dirt acts like a shield from flies and mosquitoes.

i have a fly mask but most fly sprays make his skin peel so i can only use the home made stuff. he finally healed from the last store bought fly spray i used. thanks for all the suggestions. i think i'm going to invest in a fly sheet. but what happens when he rolls? are fly sheets okay for turnout?
