| Senior Member+ | Is there really any excuse if you're breeding to not know?
(DISCLAIMER: this is not a critique of the horse, please do not do so, thank you. And names have been omitted to protect the ignorant, LOL.) *Sigh* We're always looking for the "right kind" of horse to add to the working stock as I keep getting them bought out from under me as they get "just right", LOL. I was looking through a "local" mag. yesterday and saw this horse and thought, what a nice looking 4 year old. Checked bloodlines and he's got TEJ and just a smidge of Hancock (not Blue Valentine) and The Continental. Now granted, he's a gelding so he won't be doing any breeding, LOL, but still. These folks raise "Foundation QH's" and "Buckskin QH's as their "business. That said, I would think, if they really know what they're doing, being as they're "color breeders" they would at least be able to get "normal" colors right. Nope! He's still a nice prospect, but just seeing him listed as a "Grulla" was enough to turn me off from looking any more. It just makes me wonder what else they "think" they're breeding for and have no clue about. Don't get me wrong, I understand that people NOT breeding can have difficulty distinguishing colors, but not breeders of "color". He's the left horse. ![]() (Took pictures of the picture, it's much easier to see, LOL) It's not as easy to tell on this scan, but he's got a BROWN head and brown in his points. He's a bay roan 100%. Please, as breeders, know that more people are turnned off that are willing to meet your price for a good horse, because it seems you don't know just what you are raising when something like this happens. Oh, and they have the second horses on the bottom listed as "Black" and I know when I scanned it it did funny things to the colors, but that horse is as bay as bay comes, not sun bleached. They didn't have current pictures up on their website (2006 last date updated) so it didn't do any good to go there either. *Sigh* Last edited by doublebarr; 05-05-2008 at 10:15 AM. Yea- that would irritate me too- and I know nothing about color! At least I can tell a bay from a black...

Hm yeah that is pretty bad. but luckily horses dont know it. if i ran across an add that said 'sorrel' and it was a big blood bay or regular bay i wouldnt be turned off immediately, they may well have a darn fine animal that i could buy. i wouldnt pass he/she up just because their owners dont know what color it really is. worth a peek!

I think they just kinda guess, and the color grulla is a buyer attracting color. Some buyers WOULDN'T know grulla from blue roan or overo from tobiano, maybe that is the market they are after. The horse's may not be TOP notch enough to attract the very knowledgeable buyers.

Now Cindy, you're telling me you don't like going online to see a Grulla or Blue Roan only show up as a grey? LOL. BIG pet peeve! Just like listing a Sabino Sorrel as a Red Roan. Just ruins everything!

Oh man, I am RIGHT there with you Cindy. I posted before, more than 2 years ago probably, about a "color" breeder advertising her gypsy cob as a chocolate palomino, when it was really silver dapple...It turned out to be that she did know what color he was, but knowing that the general public has no clue of the difference between the two colors...she decided to make it "easier." Bah humbug. |

I once looked at a "bay" that had some white in it's mane and tell. Yup, it was a dark buckskin. Recently saw a "palmino with a black mane and tail." WHAT???? Palominos have BLONDE manes and tails! What you have is called a BUCKSKIN. It drives me crazy, to be completely honest. Some colors CAN be tricky or decieving, but... If you are going to breed, IMHO there is NO reason not to genetically test for color. In the very least, it makes sure that registration papers are accurate. And in reality, it is so CHEAP! There is no excuse for a breeder to not know what color his/her horses are. Kristina

Oh, I know a good horse can be any color equestriandynam, but as "color breeders" they should know better and it makes one question their other breeding "ideas". endurgirl - are you saying I'm looking at buying "less than quality" horses Julie - ROTFLOL!!!!! Sounds personal to me, LOL! Quote:
