Is there really any excuse if you're breeding to not know?

That's bad... even most people that aren't color experts would recognize the colors on those two...

I once talked to this woman that told me she had a brunette horse and a blonde horse. I tried telling her she had a chestnut and a buckskin... but gave up after she kept insisting they were brunette and blonde...

AHHHHHH LOL.....that reminds me of my BIL's girlfriend. Says she used to run barrels in High school and she has a horse that is brown, just brown. I ask so does it have black mane and tail? No it's just brown it's hair is brown. I gave up and took her to Pearl and asked and pointed to the specific spots of color I was curious about, Horse has black points like pearl but brown where she is yellow. OHHHHHH okay you had a bay......she still insisted no the horse is brown

when my dad got me Starlight he said 'she is so cool lookin i like how she is brown but her legs and mane and tail are black.'
I looked at him 'Yeah dad its called bay, they are everywhere, its one of the most basic colors of horses' *shakes head* he thought it was the coolest thing lol. ah well.. what can you do??

LOL you've got me there. How about the owner of a (now gelded) palomino warmblood stud, a classic example of a "color breeder," claiming that his first foal who was clearly chestnut was a red dun?

The dam was most definitely not dun...Tisk tisk.

This frustrates me to no end. If you're going to specialize in something, at least educate yourself in your specialty!!

I think I better just ignore this thread... LOL... If they are local DB maybe we need to go shopping. I will go as your color adviser. hehehe I need an excuse to do lunch anyway because that is more fun than mailing you pedigrees that need done!!!!

I'm the same way, I don't even take a seller seriously if they can't get the color right. Now, trickier colors sure, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. But ESPECIALLY if it's a color breeder, I would atleast expect them to know what color is coming out of their mare

. Maybe we expect too much from people LOL.

eh..I understand what you mean. i can tell a bay from a back but I've never heard of grulla :P as embarrassed as I am to say it. And I know nothing about paint horses, purely because they're not big here at all. Still, if I was breeding horses I would advertise them correctly. Esp if I was a 'colour' breeder
When I was looking for a horse I came across an advert that said 'dun/grey' umm..

Actually that could be a correct advert... in that a dun like any other color can go gray...

A grulla/grullo (either spelling is correct) but most registries use grullo...
is a black horse with the dun gene... They can vary in color tone drastically on the same horse... These are all the same mare....

Here is a sight that might help you understand colors better. Two things on it are incorrect in that they do not address brown as a color and they call champagne with cream... ivory... instead of ivory the term cream is added to the base color so a sorrel champagne which is called gold would be a gold cream....
