The price of a Blue Ribbon

Today I was competing at the Pre-Royal show held at the local showgrounds (Fred's Pass). It was a very windy day and all the horses were spooking at shadows. Jack included.

I received my first ever blue ribbon (thanks to the sewin in plaits methinks) in a presentation class. Had a walk trot class (third) and then went in for the 18+ rider class.

It went downhill in a hurry. Warp factor 9 hurry. Halfway through our workout where Jack was meant to be cantering towards judge for simple change he grabbed the bit in his teeth and bolted. I almost had him turned when the log arena barrier loomed. I thought he'd jump.. he didn't. He stopped and I went over and hit my left leg heavily on the way down. I actually heard the snap. Those that attended me pulled off my boots before the swelling kicked in and told me I couldn't possibly have broken my leg due to the fact I'd be screaming in pain. I have a high pain tolerance. Even now it is only a dull ache but its there

I am now the proud owner of a fractured tibia. It it has a hairline fracture about 2" from the knee joint in a V across the bone. I am sporting a rather encumbering heavy plaster cast (temp one) and will be put in a fiberglass cast Monday week. This is the hardest earned blue ribbon I swear.

So, no riding for at least the next 6 weeks. There has been talk of possibly selling Jack and taking a break from competitive riding for a while. I'm not sure. I know that if the fence wasn't there and I managed to turn him it may not have been so bad.

The thing that irritates me the most is the Show Horse Association running the event had no designated/trained first aid staff on hand. The Polocrosse across the field had St Johns and their mini ambulance who had to be summonsed to get me.

The actual ambulance arrived pretty quickly and I was out of hospital with the cast in under 4 hours so I'm pretty happy with that result. I will be sending an e-mail to the Equestrian Federation of Australia questioning the lack of first aiders as it was an EFA affiliated event.

6 weeks of doing 4/5ths of nothing *sigh*

I hope the judge didn't have to jump too fast out of Jacks way.

If you need help wording the ad, let me know

I'm going to give it a week or so to think about it. (selling Jack) but for now my main priority is getting used to these horrid crutches and getting semi mobile.

If I may be so rude as to submit an answer for her.

This is her third fall from him. First one no one knows what happened, the knock to the head erased her memory of what happened that time. Trip to the ER to be checked out.

Second one was a bucking fit after a small jump. Resulted in a trip to the ER and much pain to the lower back, more time off work.

Todays effort was the bolt.

He does seem to be a bit unpredicatable and she does have a job that likes her to attend regularly as well as a family to care for.

I think she would be on the right track thinking of getting something not quite so challenging and a bit more stable in work ethic.

He's Been Here A Year! I Think He's Here To Stay!

Ouch, madvoice. I sympathize. I used to ride anythng and everything, which frequently ended up being what their owners were too smart to get back onto. I now have a completely different viewpoint on getting hurt. Let somebody else deal with the difficult ones.
