![]() | The Icelandic horse the following is a brief introduction and information about the icelandic horse. Enjoy The Icelandic horse was brought to the fiery island with the norse vikings that took over this island during the years of 871 - 935 and has been in icelanders life for over 1000 years The stem of the icelandic horse is strong and very pure for no blood-mix has been for over 800 years. the 'real' Breeding of this horse didn't start until the end of the 19th century on one of the most famous horse farm in Iceland which is located in Skagafirši The Icelandic horse walks free most of the year and in the past he was used for various jobs. There is alot about horse-tournaments, like racing, stallion-competitions and even obedient competitions Cattle here in iceland can't be out during the winters, but due to the thick coat the horse grows during the winters he is quite capable of being out. The icelandic foals aren't broken in until they are atleast four years old, so the wild nature of this magnificent creature can never be broken you can say that the icelandic horses have every colour available and they come in various colours the icelandic horse is 1,29 - 1,39 m tall, but you will never hear an Icelander talk about it being small The first horse race in iceland was held in Akureyri tin 1874 the icelandic horse has 5 gates walk, pace, canter, gallop and that special gate known as tölt, a gate where you can get from standing still up to good speed without changeing the gate ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
