and extended trot? I would suggest looking around youtube, there are some great examples of both. Extended and collected both require a large amount of collection- the horse must be rocked back onto his/her haunches and pushing from behind. Basically, from there, in a collected trot you use that energy to go up and a little bit forward, and in an extended trot you use the energy for more forward (a bigger stride and more lift in the front end, not faster) and a little "up". Very simplified version, but I hope that helps! ETA: just saw your latest post- but I think mine still has some relevancy so I'm not going to change it

Collecting a stride is where you shorten the steps the horse is taking while still maintaining the same tempo and energy. This generally requires a bit more hand and a LOT more leg. You don't want the horse plodding along slowly, you want it energetic and bouncy with a short step. Normal trot is as it sound. Your horse's natural pace at the trot (note some horses like to go fast or slow but that is not their natural pace it's more just lazyness or excitedness. Find the nice middle ground) You horse should have the same tempo as in collected gait but the strides should be longer, Let me see if I can find any decent pics

I quickly found a video of collected trot. This horse obviously is a bit tense and such but you can get the idea. the horse has lots of bounce and energy but a short stride. the rider is using so much leg that the horse breaks to canter at one part. Like I said just a quick search and I am sure others can find a better example but this is the rough idea Here is a quick video of 'normal' or working trot obviously the stride length is longer but the tempo is relatively the same (tho they are 2 different horses and this horse seems more relaxed from the 2 seconds I watched of it so there will be a bit of variance)

Check out the bottom of this page: http://www.classicaldressage.net/mem...ansitions.html Really great, but very advanced, photos of a working trot('normal trot') and collected.
