The day he died....

Two years ago today was the hardest day of my life. 27 year old Smokey-Doo was gone. In March of 2002 was the last time I saw him alive. Then on June 11th, I returned to visit Blackie and Smokey. When I couldn't find him anywhere I began to worry. Then I saw his name plate on his stall gone. I called Caroline and asked what happened. She told me, that morning, hours before I arrived, he couldn't make it any longer. . There's a lot more details about this but it's too hard to relive that day in my head. The horse I cared about so much was never to be with me again. Can anyone else relate? Does anyone have any moments like this? How do you/ did you cope with them?

These photos are old.

I'll have to scan some of my old Charlie.
But he died 20/10/00. And I had to be the one to tell the vets to give him the Green Dream.
We had a perfect connection, whilst he was in the clinic we developed a bond.
I remember one day when he was allowed to be in a paddock for the first time in 6 months, I went to visit him and spent the whole time just grooming and playing with him. After a little while my parents told me I had to leave, I thought it was too soon, and so did Charlie. So on his three good legs he galloped to the gate before I could get there and started bucking and neighing so I couldn't get past. So to try to get him away I showed him an apple and then tossed it away. He did his famous three-legged canter, picked it up then brought it back to me. He was always doing little things like that with me.
It was the hardest day of my life to tell the vets to put him down.
But I got through it by giving all of that love to my other animals and walking for hours on end to clear my mind.
You just have to move on as best you can, remember the good times you had with him, how much love he gave, he's in no more pain anymore.

Catalyst and Syn,

They are the saddest stories I have heard in a LONG time. I'm sitting here bawling coz I have an old horse called Stormy who I rode for years (he was my pony club hack). He is now 34 years old and getting ready to leave as well. I just hope when the time comes I will be able to handle it as well as both of u did. I'm sorry to here about urs losses. Its one of those things that I dont think u ever quite get over.

Yours Sincerely,

Nikki

P.S He even looks a lot like Smokey.

If I ever figure out how to post pictures, I'll put him up.

You can use the "manage attachments" option (scroll all the way down when posting). That way you can post a pic directly from your computer, no URL needed.

Sorry to hear that SyntheticTrust, very sad. Candygirl can relate to you with this story.

I'm so sorry honey. You are in my thoughts today! (course you know that anyway! ) It is VERY hard to cope with the death of a horse. Not a day goes by I don't mourn my 3.

Not a day goes by that I don't see fire and smoke billowing 60 feet high out of the barn roof. I will smell that smoke until the day I die. I wish I could say it gets easier, but I'm not thoroughly convinced myself.

You are in my prayers. You'll make it through okay
