The Best Trees for the Pasture?

We are going to plant some more trees in our horses' pasture.

We have some hickory trees but those grow nuts hickory nuts and I didn't think it was a good idea to have a horse standing under the tree when a nut dropped.

Also we have pine trees but I don't really like those for shade and stuff.

Oak trees won't work because they have acorns and acorns are poisonous to horses.

What kind of tree do you think would be the best? I need one that will provide shade and some protection from rain, is not poisonous, and can survive in Texas. What do you think?

There is this tree down the street from us that isn't very old and I'm thinking of digging it up and planting it in the pasture. I have no idea what kind it is. It doesn't look poisonous but you know it still could be.

Thanks fo your help.

How about willow oak? They have lil thin leaves, not huge acorns, and are great trees when mature. I have swamp maple, sassafrass, holly and a few w.oaks on my property. Oh and beeches. Beeches need really good soil, tho. I even seem to have a chestnut, a lil one.
