The best pair of clippers to buy?

Well I'm finally getting to the point where my hair cutting scissors will no longer serve my purpose with Isis now that we're actually showing and have a show schedule. (No more than once a month this year, but I hope to do more next year and a little more the next) Being a teenager and not the richest teenager in the world, I don't want to go too expensive but I don't want to get a pair that would blow out on me right away. Do you guys have suggestions for a pair of clippers to clip chin, muzzle, ear and leg hairs that works well but isn't too expensive? What's the cheapest I can get away with without compromising quality too much? Also, what's the best brand? I've heard that Ostars are a waste of money... but what is your guys opinions?

Wahl refiner/trimmers are great sturdy clippers for that purpose. They retail here in Australia for around AUD$120.

As for the heavy duty ones. I'm quite partial to Osters.

Being a dog groomer and a sheep owner and a horse owner I'm rather well versed on Electric clippers, lol... In my book Andis and WAHL are the two best clippers on the market! Do NOT get a clipper with an adjustable blade ... Yes they cost less but you can't easily replace the blades when needed so you end up having to buy a new set of clippers... Instead, get a pair of clippers that has detachable standard blades. That way you can buy ANY brand Blade (Oster, Whal, ANdis...) and use it on any brand clipper. Get a #10 blade for legs and a #30 or #40 blade for face and bridlepath. Also get a can of COOL LUBE which will clean, disinfect, lubricate and cool your blade as you are working but NOT cause the blade to get gummed up like blade oil can cause.

If I had to choose between Andis or Whal... I would take the Andis as they're a bit hardier if dropped etc... For a brand new pair that comes with a #10 blade expect to pay about $120.00 US... IF you take care of the clipper it will last YEARS... Blades on the other hand do have to periodically sharpened and eventually replaced... they run between $14.00 - $30.00 US... I buy mine out of the DOG supplier www.petedge.com they usually have the best deals. Here is a good deal IMO and I like this clipper alot... I have two of them, LOL..

wyldterv, forgive me for my lack of knowledge, but what's the difference between "adjustable blades" and "detachable standard blades"? How do they both work? You can tell I've really just starded looking into clippers.

No forgiveness needed, you're asking a good question!!! An Adjustable blade clipper has ONE permanently attached blade that can adjust in settings between about 10 and 30 by moving a lever on the clipper. These work GREAT for just whiskers but really don't work well for heavier duty clipping jobs like legs, fetlocks, bridlepaths, etc... AND when the blade gets dull you can't just go have it sharpend or buy a new one like a detachable blade style.

Detachable blades are just that, blades that come off of the clipper head easily with no tools required and are made to be easily changed out for different blades sizes (btw, the larger the number, like #40, the closer to the skin it clips. A standard clip for legs and fetlocks is #10... face usually #30-40, same for bridle path, so you'd want a #10 blade and a #30 or 40 blade).

Did that make any sense???

Yes it did, thank you. So for the ajustable blades, there's no way to remove them?? That doesn't even make sense. I'll deffinetly get one with detachable blades.

Actually Kool Lube does not disinfect. You'd have to go with Clean N Care (Not for sale in CA) or, preferably Andis COOL CARE.

I happen to work for Ryans Pet Supplies and yes, Andis are far superior to Oster in the quality of their clippers. The Super 2 speed pictured above is the fastest clipper Andis has available, but because of that, it will heat up much faster than a single speed. If you want to save yourself from excessive hot blades, go with Ceramic. Not only do they withstand horse hair better, they stay cooler longer. The Super 2s come in Blue and Silver besides the Burgandy

No, I don't get paid based on sales. Im actually a buyer for the company

Wyld, actually even the small finish trimmer blades and the adjustables can all be sharpened. However, yes, the detachables are able to withstand more sharpenings. And get 2 of each size. One for a back up, incase your blades are being sharpened, or they break a tooth off by accident when dropped.
