Peppermint Apples*

1 large apple
1 shredded carrot
1/2-cup oats
1/4-cup honey
5 tablespoons sugar
1-tablespoon salt
3 crushed peppermints

Cut the apples in large chunks and set aside. Mix the honey, peppermints, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Mix the oats and carrots in a separate shallow bowl. Next, coat the apple chunks in the honey mixture and roll in the oat mixture. Place on a plate or Tupperware container and refrigerate until you feed to horses. Do not let recipe sit for more than two days. The recipe makes plenty for two horses.

Oatmeal / Apple Snack*

1-cup oatmeal
1-cup whole-wheat flour
1/2-tablespoon brown sugar
2 spoonfuls molasses
1/2-cup water
1/4 diced apple

Preheat oven to 350. Mix all ingredients in order listed excluding the apple. Grab some batter and stick a piece of the apple into the batter so it cannot be seen from the outside. Do this to every cookie, and place them on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes.

1 cup whole wheat flour
2 spoonfuls molasses
1/2 cup water

Pumpkin Style Horse Apples*

Grain
Molasses
Dried apple flakes
Oats
Apple
any little things that your horse likes

Cut out all of the insides out of an apple like you are carving a pumpkin. Put in a layer of grain, molasses, and apple flakes. Add another drop of molasses. Add as many more layers as you can fit using anything you want, or use the same ingredients. Pellets, shredded carrots, bran, and alfalfa all work. Once you have made all of your layers, put the top of the apple back on like you would a carved pumpkin. If you add bran, make sure you add hot water to the bran first.

Super Surprise*

Molasses
Carrots, sliced
Apples, one for as each horse you are going to feed
Oats
Raisins
Peppermints, crushed

Using a spoon, take the insides out of an apple. Mix what came out of the apple and all your ingredients together except the peppermints. Put the ingredients into the apple. Sprinkle the peppermint pieces on top.

Quick Carrot Treat*

1 carrot
honey
powdered sugar

Place the carrot on a paper plate. Put some honey on it, and role it in some powdered sugar. The amount of sugar depends on how much your horse likes sugar. Place some kind of wrapping on top of the carrot and place it in the refrigerator until the honey hardens.

1-1/2 cups carrots, finely chopped or shredded
3/4 cup oatmeal, Quick Oats works great

sprinkle of some cinnamon sugar

Cut apples and cut or shred carrots. Use a few larger chunks of apple. Add them in a mixing bowl with oatmeal. Add apple juice, flour, brown sugar, and molasses. DO NOT put cinnamon sugar in yet! Mix together. If runny add more oats. If it isn't sticky, add more molasses. Put mix into a lightly greased muffin pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 8 to 10 minutes.

1/2-cup corn syrup
Combine youth feed with carrots, salt, and oats in a bowl. Mix well. Heat molasses and add with corn syrup to the mix. Add applesauce and mix. Roll into balls and bake on a greased cookie sheet at 200 degrees for an hour. Let cool and place in a container to stay fresh.

Cut the carrots into pieces about 2 inches long. Pour some molasses onto a paper plate and roll the carrot pieces in it. Pour the oats onto another paper plate and roll the carrot pieces in the oats. Chill until ready to serve.

Apple and Oat Mush*
2 small apples
2 cups of oatmeal (dry)
1/4 cup of vegetable oil
1/4 cup of molasses
2 teaspoons of sugar
1/4 cup of flour
1/4 cup of water

Shred the apples in a cheese grater. Put them in a bowl. Add the oats, vegetable oil, molasses, sugar, flour, and water. Mix well with an electric mixer. Add more oats or flour if too watery, or add more water if too sticky.

Rice Krispie Bars*
1 cup Rice Krispies
1/4-cup molasses
1/4-cup vegetable oil
1 shredded apple
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2-cup flour
1/4-cup water
Mix everything together in a bowl. Make a rectangle with some tin foil about the shape of granola bars. Pour mixture into the bars then set on a cookie sheet. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cook for 15 minutes or until they turn hard. Take out of tin foil and place in the refrigerator overnight or for 30 minutes before serving.

Carrot Candies*
3 large carrots
1/2 (one half) small red apple
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 tablespoons unbleached flour
5 crackers, the dry, crunchy kind
3 tablespoons molasses
1/2 (one half) cup Quaker oats
raisins (optional)
Peel the carrots and cut them into chunks. Cut the apple as well. You can include the core but try to remove all the seeds. Put the apple and carrot pieces into the blender and blend for a few seconds or until finely chopped. Add the crackers and the Quaker oats and blend again until all the pieces are about the same size. Pour the molasses in and add the flour and brown sugar. Blend again until fairly smooth. There can be a few chunks of carrot but try to get it as smooth as possible. If the mixture appears to be too dry, you may add a very small amount of fruit juice. Now grease a mini muffin tin using vegetable oil (as horses are vegetarians) and flour the pan. Fill the tin with the mixture and if you like top each "candy" with a raisin. Sprinkle lightly with flour and cover with plastic wrap and put in the freezer for 3-4 hours. Serve cold.

Stuffed Carrots*
1 apple
large carrots (not baby carrots)
Sugar
Cut the ends off the carrots so that the piece is one inch long. Hollow it out. Dice the apples into very small pieces. Dice the carrot centers and mix them together with the diced apple until it's a paste. Roll the hollowed out carrot pieces in sugar. Stuff the apple and carrot paste into the large carrot pieces. Feed to your horse. Can be stored in the freezer.

Horses Trail Mix*
Apples
Carrots
Sugar
Dice the apples into large pieces and cut the carrots into medium pieces. Add one half-teaspoon sugar and shake for 10 seconds. Can be stored in the freezer.

Winter Warmer*
1-cup equi-pellets or oats
2 cups molasses
1-cup wheaten chaff
1-cup oaten chaff
1-cup lucern chaff
1-cup bran
Hot water
Carrots and apples
Mix chaff and oats together in a bucket. In a separate bucket, mix water and molasses and pour over chaff mix. Mix it all together thoroughly. How much water and molasses you use is up to you. Add the carrots and apples. This feed can be split to use for 2 or 3 horses or just add a handful to their normal feed, because it is quite rich* and you don't want your horse to colic.

Nasty Weather Treat*
This easy recipe idea is especially good on cold winter days or cold rainy days.
Bran
Sweet feed
Chopped carrots or apples
Molasses
Mix together and serve warm (not hot).

Horse Jerky*
1 apple
2 carrots
6 strawberries
1-cup oatmeal

Apple Snacks*
Large Apple
Bran
Molasses
Diced carrots (optional)
Hollow large apple as if it were a pumpkin. Mix the other ingredients together and place in the apple. Freeze overnight* and the next day, warm it up in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Cut it up and serve.

Sprinkled Apples*
Apples
Honey
Cinnamon
Chop one to two apples, then mix honey and cinnamon together. With a knife spread the honey and cinnamon mixture on apple chunks. Then serve.

Sweet Tooth Treat*
Quaker Oats
Sugar
Salt
Carrots
Molasses
Water if necessary but not too much
Heat oven to around 350 degrees. Mix everything together in a bowl. Have cupcake trays greased. Once all ingredients are mixed, scoop evenly into cupcake trays. Cook for about 10 to 15 minutes. They usually break up and look like sweet feed. Try to pack them down in the pan.

Equine "Soup"*

Lettuce
Minced apples
Tomatoes
Dice fine then mix and serve, add water if needed.

Good Morning Breakfast*
2 chopped up carrots
1 chopped up apple

Some Horse Treat*
1-cup flour
1 handful horse feed
1-tablespoon sugar
1/2 (one half) handful oats
1/2 (one half) cup molasses

Smart Medicine Ball Snack*

1 packet of instant oatmeal
1 handful of oats

1 cup molasses
1/4 (one quarter) cup brown sugar

Cookies don't rise, so place as many on a sheet as possible. Bake 1 hour, turn off oven and let cookies sit for another hour before removing from sheet.
These cookies are hard, numerous, and they won't go bad any time soon. You may want to make a half size recipe. This is an all day project, but you will have treats for months.

Pony Pizza*
1 plain rice cake
Applesauce
Carrot slices
Apples slices
Spread some applesauce on the rice cake, and then take your cut apples and carrots and put them on top.

Oat Mash*
1 packet of instant Oatmeal

Ice Cream Cones*
Mix about 1/4 (one quarter) cup applesauce and a small handful of horse feed. Put in an ice cream cone and sprinkle with a bit of sugar. Add some oats and grated carrots and/or apples on top. You can also put their medication inside and they will never notice the medicine.

Sugar And Rice Crispies Coated Apples*
2 apples
1/2-cup sugar
Small bowl of molasses
1 cup Rice Crispies
Cut apples into slices. Put sugar and rice crispies in a big zip lock baggy. Dip apple pieces in molasses and add to baggy. Once all are in, zip shut and shake.

CUPBOARD COOKIES
I was planning on making horse treats but found out I didn't have any molasses!
So I invented these and even one of the pickiest of my horses likes them.
3 small to medium apples, peeled
3 medium sized carrots, peeled
3 tablespoons of granulated sugar
1 1/2 (one and one half) cups of uncooked Quaker oats
3 slices of plain white bread
3/4 (three quarters) cup of powdered sugar
1/4 (one fourth) cup water
1/4 (one fourth) cup of vegetable oil
These measurements don't have to be precise I know mine sure weren't!
1. Shred the apples and put them in a medium bowl. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the granulated sugar.
2. Shred the carrots and combine them with the apples.
3. Pour in the rest of the sugar.
4. Mix in the Quaker oats.
5. One at a time tear apart the bread into tiny pieces and drop into the mixture.
6. Add the powdered sugar.
7. Stir in the water.
8. Stir in the vegetable oil and mix well.
If the mixture looks too thin, add more oats. If it looks too thick, add more water. Only do this about a tablespoon at a time. Oil two cookie sheets, and put the batter on them by spoonfuls. They should be an inch and a half apart. Bake for 17 minutes at 350 degrees or until golden brown. Let cool and serve them to your horse. If you have molasses, you could drizzle some over the treats; and put them in the refrigerator.

Flip and bake for an additional 45 minutes until they are dried out. Keep checking to make sure they don't burn.

APPLE HORSE COOKIES

Drop by spoonfuls onto ungreased baking sheets and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove and cool. Makes about 4 dozen.

HORSE MUFFINS
Ingredients:
1 ½ (one and one half) cups bran
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
¾ (three quarters) cup skimmed milk
½ (one half) cup molasses
2 tablespoons corn oil
1 egg, beaten
Stir together bran, flour, soda, and baking powder. Mix together milk, molasses, oil, and egg. Mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients. Bake in greased or paper lined muffin tins at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.

CARROT CRISPIES
Ingredients:
2 carrots, shredded
1 apple, chopped in small pieces
1/3 cup molasses
½ to ¾ cup bran (one half to three quarters)

SIMPLE RECIPE

MEADOW MUFFINS
In a huge bowl, combine the following
4 quarts sweet feed
2 cups bran or bran cereal
2 cups oats (I used Quaker oats from grocery store) *optional
1 can frozen apple juice concentrate
5-6 carrots, chopped (I use my food processor)
3 apples, chopped (optional)
2 cups raisins (optional)
1 jar molasses
1 jar Karo corn syrup
5 eggs
2-3 cups corn oil
2 tablespoons baking powder
Add flour and water, alternating until you have a cake like batter that is very chunky. Spray muffin tins with an oil and drop by spoonfuls. They will rise a little, so don't overfill. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10-15 minutes. Cool on a paper towel. Or you may pour batter into a large baking pan (well-greased!) to make cookie bars. Bake until center is dry and firm (probably 30-60 minutes, depending on your pan and amount of batter). Let cool overnight or for several hours. Cut into squares. This makes a huge amount (2 grocery bags full), so you may want to cut the recipe down by a factor of 2 or 4.

1 1/2 (one and one half) cups crimped or rolled oats
3/4 (three quarters) cup water
1/4 (one quarter) cup sugar
Drop onto greased (or Pam) cookie sheet by medium teaspoonful. Flatten with fork dipped in water. Make as flat as possible so they come out very crunchy. Bake at 300 degrees for 20 minutes. Take out and turn the cookies over and bake for an additional 10 to 20 minutes or until very dry and crunchy.

APPLE CINNAMON SOUP
1 packet of apple cinnamon Quaker Oatmeal
2 apples, sliced
2 handfuls of Cracklin Oat Bran Cereal
1/2 (one half) of a small jar of apple sauce
3 cups of bran or the amount that you think suitable for your horse
Add cinnamon and sugar if desired
Mix with hot water until you get a gooey soup.

AFTER RIDING COOKIES
4 cups wheat flour
3 cups oatmeal
1 egg
4 tablespoons brown sugar
3/4 (three quarters) cup applesauce
4 tablespoons oil
1/2 (one half) cup molasses
1 cup hot water
Bake at 300 degrees on a greased cookie sheet.
Mix flour, oatmeal, and brown sugar in VERY large bowl. Then add egg, oil, applesauce, and molasses. Finally, add hot water and mix well. I normally remove any jewelry and just reach in to mix like bread dough. Stirring with a large fork or spoon is too hard on my arms. Roll out the dough to one half inch thick on floured surface, and cut out shapes or press into the cookie sheet. Bake 45 to 60 minutes. Turn off oven and cut with a pizza cutter into squares and let cool in the oven overnight. My horses fight over these cookies.

CODY'S OATIES
DRY INGREDIENTS:
2 C white or yellow corn meal
3 C old-fashioned oats (not instant)
1 C flaxseed OR wheat germ OR whole oats OR bran OR horse grain of choice
1 C nonfat dry milk powder
1 T baking powder
6 C flour
1 C brown sugar, packed
1 T salt - optional
WET INGREDIENTS:
2 C light or dark molasses (one 16-oz jar) OR corn syrup OR combination
1 C corn oil
water to moisten (usually 1 C; do this last; amount will vary)
Preheat the oven to 275F. In a big bowl, mix together the dry ingredients. Add the wet ingredients and stir thoroughly to blend, about 2 or 3 minutes, adding enough water to make a stiff dough. (Don't add too much!) Divide the dough between 2 lightly greased jelly roll pans (looks like a cookie sheet with shallow rims on all sides) and, using your hands, pat the dough gently to level it off and fill each pan completely. Bake at 275F for one hour. After an hour, remove from the oven and, using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, score into 1- or 2 inch blocks. (You don't have to cut all the way through - just make indentations.) Return to the oven and bake until almost all the water has evaporated- usually another half hour, but could be more or less depending on humidity, the characteristics of your ingredients, etc.) You don't want the treats to brown - just to dry out. Cool in the pan, then break into pieces along score marks. Keeps indefinitely in a tightly closed container. Warning: A husband found the cooling treats and started eating them. If this happens, do NOT tell your husband he has just eaten horse treats, but just let him think this is some new "health cookie" you've devised to extend his life span. ;-)
