I have ridden in a Hereford (before they were bought out by TexTan) western saddle for almost 30 years--love it and am fortunate that it fits the TWH mare we rescued a year ago. While the rough out seat is starting to look worn, the leather in this saddle is still fantastic and I still get many compliments on the tooling and how pretty the saddle is.

My hubby has an old Hereford roping saddle. It is well made but way too narrow for any of the horses we have now.

    Got a pic?

Does it have buckstitching? That is one good indicator.

Can you find a serial number on the saddle??? That will give you the information needed to date it.

Texas Tanning is their old name from '405s or '50s and earlier. From at least the '60s on, I am fairly certain that the TexTan name was in use. Styling is a better clue to the age. Post some pictures.

Hi Megsmom, I didn't have any luck from tex tan on any info either. The only info I received was from Chuck at this forum. Here is what I have found, Texas tanning mfg was the company in the 30's to sometime in the mid 40's when it became tex tan. I have a saddle of each. The texas tanning has a metal plate marked as such on the rear of the saddle which says Texas Tanning Mfg yoakum Tx, Hereford brand. The brahma is marked tex tan of yoakum brahma brand on both fenders. If yours is marked both then I would think you have something pretty rare. This might be the link to one thought that the brahma goes back to the 40's. The only texas tanning saddles I have seen have been marked hereford brand. If any body has any more info or my info is incorrect please let us know.
