Question Terrified or cold????

I went out to feed Minx in my new raincoat. The horses as I expected freaked when they saw me but normally they settle down when I take the hood off and talk to them.

Jack and Curly settled down after a good sniff of the coat and my hand and they were reassured it was me.

Minx however was acting funny (weird funny). He sniffed at me let me pet him a little then moved of as if terrified. When he stopped he had his feet under him and was shivering badly. Every time I got close he spooked a little more.

I had to take his hay all the way out to him. That was fine with me but when I got close enough he did something really strange. He dropped his head almost to the ground and started side stepping toward me. I took a couple of steps back and dropped his hay then he started eating fine.

I went to talk to Jack and Curly for a minute and when I turned around to leave Minx put his head up, didn't spook, and wasn't shivering anymore.

What was that all about? Got any ideas?

KC

Sounds like he was trying to make himself look like a tough guy. A lowered head is usually a passive gesture. But it sounds like he was snaking his neck, that is an aggressive posture. A bite threat to be exact (don't panic, it was probably a mime threat) As for his side stepping, that's aggressive posturing too. When a horse turns his shoulder at his object of attention and pushes towards it, that is showing dominance or mild aggression. He REALLY doesn't like that coat. LOL!
