Tennesse walker over-reaching.....

Today I was cantering like always and after we were done I noticed he had 2 cuts on the back of this front 2 feet right above his hoof.. I had to go buy some wound care (lost mine) and so I went ahead and bought bell-boots.

If you had problems with your horse over-reaching, did you just use bellboots or what did you do?

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Hmmm...I'm not sure as I've never had a horse that over-reaches. I would think boots on the back so he can't cut himself? Not sure. Good luck with him, hopefully someone here can help you out!

ya, I would say bell boots on his front feet would work. My horse doesn't over-reach, but I've seen other horses do it(and they had bell boots on). Not sure what else would work though...I'm sure someone will though!

Your TWH should overreach. In fact, the bigger the over reach the "better" the "walker".

Bell boots should help with any knicks.

I wouldn't do polos, especially if you're not familiar with how to wrap them. You could end up with more damage done than protection provided.

If he's not been prone to them in the past, I'd use bell boots until the farrier can get out and then explore maybe having his feet done a little more often. Regular trims are said to help as well.

Somtimes if they are a hot horse, they don't concentrate on there gait. I have a really hot Tw but you just got to gatther him up and make him stay in his gait. When they loose concentration they make mistakes and that is what he did by hitting his feet together.

I'd be finding a new farrier that is experienced in Walking horses. They should over reach but not interfere. Top 'big lick' will over reach 15 - 18 inches so do flat shod but not quite as far.

Bell boots should prevent damage/injury.
