Teaching tricks!

Ok i would love 2 teach my horse some tricks. I can teach him how 2 bow but i have no idea how 2 do any others. Can you tell me some and how 2 teach them. My friends horse picks up his lead when dropped and also raises his lips when you click your fingers. So please anyone have any good ideas?? Thanks

i taught my guy to shake a hoof, and count. hehe, i do stretches before i ride to make sure there aren't any pinches under his girth, so i would just cluck to him to lift his leg up. So now, i hold my hand out or cluck and he shakes a hoof. To count, i'll cluck or give him the hand signal multiple times.lol.

I'm teaching my horse to bow and lay down right now. Quervo (my horse) knows how to "count" as well. Quervo also knows how to follow the edge of a stick (that way I can make him go lots of places, etc), and he knows how to push something on command, and pick things up on command. Its really fun to do tricks! I just started clicker training, which is really fun and makes it easier to teach a lot of the tricks! Good luck

ooooh, i know how to teach a horse to bow (sitting on their haunches) and lay down, but i've never done it with my guy. You pick up one of their front legs and hold it, enoucraging them to rock back (to evenutally sit). Now, their head and neck should be low (meaning they are comfortable in the situation). Once their 'sitting' this is the bow. Now, to make them lie down, gently kick out their other front leg and roll them over (legs away from you!). To keep them from getting up, hold their head upwards until they are comforatable with being down.

Takes lots of time, i'v been practicing the bow with my horse for a couple of weeks. It's hard to make them 'sit', takes a lot of understanding.

this one stallion that the head of our Arabian Horse Club owned, Bachelor Bey, he was doing the liberty class at the local arabian show, and one of the people who was allowed in the ring with him, she stopped him with her hands up, then dropped her hands almost to the ground and Bachelor did the cutest little bunny hop like 4 times. i couldn't tell you how they trained him though.

There is a tricktraining book called "trickonometry" (Sp) it is a good start to several tricks.
But honestly learning natural horsemanship is the best start, because most tricks are about trust and giving to pressures.

If you are really into tricks i would suggest getting the book, Click Train Your Horse by Alexandra Kurland. It would really speed things along. My mom wont let me teach our horse tricks, but she knows how to drop her head on command, we are working at lifting up your back feet. I highly recommend it and it is relatively easy.

A POA that I used to ride can bow, flicker her lip, nicker at comand(what is the point of that), pull carts (not exactly a trick), "dance" (aka side step). All you need is carrots! LOL
