| Senior Member | Teaching to square up... My 2 year old sometimes will get square and other times will not. I am trying to train him for halter so want to get it down pat. What is the best way to teach him? If there is any!

| Senior Member | My guy has his front feet square but always wants to keep his back feet...one back and one forward...I worked with him today for about 20 minutes on this on that is always the result I got on a halt.

| Full Member | My trainer teaches the front feet first, and then when they get that down she teaches the back feet. When she wants them to square up, she says "Set..." . Her daughters horse is an awesome showmanship horse - he squares up really nicely. It also takes patience. Lotsa patience. Good luck with it! |

| Senior Member+ | Supposedly backfeet 1st is easier, probly bc uneven backfeet can be put in place via backup cues at the halter. Front feet can be set manually in training if the horse is insolent/ not getting it. I also use "set/ setup"; had a local judge do a doubletake when he heard the cue in passing and saw the horse set up without being touched. Some people dont like verbal cues, I prefer it to a lot of chinchain action.

Funny cos I use verbal cues for everything else from picking up her feet "up" to opening a gate "gate". Will give that one a go! |
