| Junior Member | teaching to square up
What is the best way to teach/enforce the cue for a horse to square up/set up for inspection (i.e. for showmanship or halter classes)? The horse I'm working with has a decent idea of what he's supposed to do (pivots, etc) but squaring him up takes forever sometimes. Any tips? |

Practice setting up EVERYDAY... not for long periods of time, but when ever you get your horse out, and stop, set him up. When you take him to the cross ties, set him up. It works, a little time everyday will do you wonders. I personally dont have a set cue, my horse has set up so many times he knows what he is supposed to do when we stop and a i turn slightly. Also, the post before mine with the link to the site, I also, after setting up, pose myself correctly when done, so he knows to not move his feet.

I make it a point that whenever I stop, I turn and set him up. Square his feet by hand and tell him "square" then pat and praise him. He is almost getting to the point that when we stop and I turn towards him he starts moving his feet. He hasn't quite got it perfect yet, but we are getting there. Lots of praise and consistency. Seriously, I do it every time I stop him. Good luck and keep practicing.

Lift his head up slightly and to his right and then forward or back to move a left front foot. (open the door). Down (stops moving of front foot) and to his right to move his left rear. Make the cues smaller as you go. |
