They look tall to me...I had some like that and they hurt so bad as they rubbed my ankles that I couldn't function in them. Don't know what it would have been like if I had rode in them every day to break them in ....but when they bring tears to your eyes from the bunching at the ankles rubbing you raw and cutting into the side of your foot, it makes you not too concerned with keeping them to find out if they will fit later!

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. Sigh....This sure complicates things! These are reg calf, reg height boots. The thought of me needing slim/tall boots amuses me quite a bit.

These are the measurements of this boot...
Foot width: B
Calf: regular
Inside top: 13 3/8
Inside calf: 14
Height: 18

I could get the Hamptons, which would be in this size...
http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=KD-38438

Slim (B)
12 5/8
13 5/8
18 7/8
Or this size

Regular (B)
13 5/8
14 1/2
18 7/8

The Ariat Challenges that I wanted sold out

They are not too tall at all.

For what you're looking for, I don't think they're too short either. Once they drop I think they'll be too short for what's considered proper for the show ring, but if you aren't showing, who cares

The bigger issue is the width at the top. Part of the reason for them to be snug is not just looks - it's function. Having them loose up top leads to a better chance of them starting to slide down your heel. However, a good shoe guy can take them in *as long as* you make him understand the fit you're after.

My boots are Tall height/Regular calf which was really amusing to me because I am def not long from knee to ankle, and my calves are pretty wide.

I had to go try on boots locally, every single model and brand fit differently. If I'd ordered off the size charts, I would never have gotten the talls.

I know you say you don't need them to be show-worthy, but if there's any chance you might show anytime in the next couple years, it seems a shame to me that you'd have to get a whole nother pair of boots.

If these are a regular calf, then you likely could indeed take a slim calf.

did you measure the widest part of your calf, over breeches, while sitting? That's what you need to do.

Or I could do these (dress boots are actually more formal for fox hunting) http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=KD-38332A

Though the "tall" height is 19 1/4" and the only calf sizes they offer in my size are 13 or 14 1/2.

That's one of my concerns, too. I could have made the Ovations my aunt sent work, but I really could fit a whole fist in the top of the boot. Otherwise they seemed to fit OK in the calf, which was odd because they were a wide calf in that brand. I could just see them falling down my leg once they were broken in though

I'm hoping that they will fit even close to the same as they are the same brand?? Wishful thinking I know. Unfortunately all the tack stores around me only carry top-of-the-line boots, and will measure for custom, as most people who ride/show here can afford them I bet I could find some of the lower end ones if I drove a ways, but I don't have much time right now!

And you know, I was thinking last night. I need new paddock boots and half chaps, too. My Ariats are probably 10 years old and still work fine, but they are not cosmetically fine If I need tall boots, too...Seems like it would make sense to get a pair of decent tall boots rather than paddocks, half chaps, AND tall boots.

I actually did that over jeans yesterday, and I was barely over 13".

Thanks so much for your help guys.

Also since you are going to be foxhunting in VA, you will need some thick socks. Certain parts of VA are a bit nippy.

LOL I was thinking that too But I don't want to get boots that fit best with thick socks because aside from 12 days this winter, I will be riding in nice California weather!

This is the one thing I HATE about tall boots... The bunching in the ankles.... Why don't companies make the ankles quite a bit smaller??
