Smile Tail wrapping what is it?

Sorry for asking this and I'm sure you's have answered it before but what is it? And why's it done? Looked at the thread about how to but why? does it not stop them swishing the flies and does it hurt if the swish you? (getting a tail (horses) in the eye stings like a *****!) Sorry for being a thicko

There are all sorts of reasons to wrap a tail. Mostly it is done to protect the hair from grime and breakage. The idea is to grow long thick tails by keeping them from catching on things, being nibbled on my buddies, being scratched out, etc. People also wrap tails to avoid dealing with burs when turned out and/or when riding trails. They are helpful when working in a muddy enivronment (ever watch racehorses run in the mud?). They keep the tail out of the way for breeding, palpation, and foaling. So, yeah, there are lots of reasons, but the reason for the post you referrenced is mostly cosmetic, for growth purposes.

They can still swish flies just fine. Yes it hurts to get whacked by one. :-D
