Post Tail troubles

Well, this kinda goes along with the Mane and tail bagging post, but its sorta different I have been debating whether or not to braid and bag my mare's tail. She has a VERY full, beautiful tail that drags the ground. I would LOVE for it to be longer and was trying to decide if I should braid/bag it, or not. I trim it occasionally to keep her from stepping on it and pulling it out. I am worried that if I permanently keep it braided it will thin out and end up looking worse than when I started Essentailly, has anyone had any negative experience with tail bagging? Do yall think that I should take the chance, or leave her tail as it is?

hi. braiding and bagging your horses tail will not harm it. in fact it should make it grow fuller and longer and also it helps to keep you from having to brush it so much.as for the braidin, just make sure you don't braid to close or to tight by the tailbone and you should have no problems. i always keep my horses tails braided and sometimes bagged. it helps with circulation and keeps the tails from catching on things. hope this helps.

When you braid it, leave it in no longer than 2 wks, then pull it out for a little bit one day, brush it and re-braid it. The mare next to me has that done. She's bagged all the time and has a beautiful full, long tail.

Would braiding make the horses bum get cold? Because they do use the tail for warm and protection so that they don't get cold on the bum.

It all depends on how thick their tail is. If it's like my horse, skinny ol rat lookin tail, it doesn't do too much good. It's actually thicker when bagged.....lol

I think I'm gonna give it a try.. I just REALLY don't want her tail to thin out. It's nice and full (and I mean REALLY full!), I'd just like it to be longer...I'll take the chance. What kinds of conditioners do yall recommend to keep in her tail when I put it up?

Cowboy Magic Detangler and shine, great stuff. Actually, when you braid the tail adn keep it up, it prevents breakage, so the top hair has a chance to grow out even with the rest of the tail, also, the weight of the braid and bag promotes growth

Oh yes, don't be afraid to use lots and lots of Cowboy Magic as you want...its amazing what that stuff does. Unfortunately it makes your hands incredibly slippery and therefore unable to tighten a girth, so I suggest you use it after you ride

My Belgian is crossed with morgan and has the most magnificant tail in the world, huge, thick, ringlets even! I get compliments on it at every show from everyone, it is an amazing tail. It is also VERY long....and I love it.

I have never braided or bagged his tail ever, I groom him daily and leave it well enough alone and it is perfect! Just to let you know...
