Tail Bags = Tail Rubbing?

Is there any risk of a tail bag causing a horse to rub the root of the tail?

I've had Regal rub a huge chunk of his tail out before, so I'm crazy cautious about this stuff. I'd like to bag or sheet his tail when icy ycuky weather comes, but I just keep thinking if I was a horse, and someone tied somethign to my tail, the first thing I'd do is try to rub it off.

Am I wrong? Does it not bug them?

From my experiance, no it shouldn't make him rub his tail. I don't think it will cause a problem =)

If you get a tail bag like this:http://www.statelinetack.com/global/...=1131244894803, then all you have to do is braid the tail, starting about 3 inches from where the bone ends. Loosely braided at the top and tighter as it goes down. Then fold the tail up and tape it with masking tape or something convenient, and put the snap through an opening at the top of the braid. The horse can barely tell it's there. The main cause for rubbing is an itchy bone. Just clean it(anti-dandruff shampoo works great) and make sure there's no residue. My horse has worn a tail bag since he was 4 years old(he's 10 now) and he's never rubbed out his tail.

i wouldn't have thought that it was that that was bugging him. he could just be a very itchy horse. just keep an eye on it and it it gets worse then it could be the start of sweet itch. but it could also be something that he has eaten.

No, what made him itch that one time was totally my fault. I put a tail conditioner on too thickly, and applied it up on the bone. Next day I came out and a 4" by 1" section was completely rubbed out. No other rubbing before or since.

So now I'm so cautious about what I out on his tail and how I do it. So tail bags really don't make them fussy about their tail?

I was the same way about YoYo! She hated those 1-piece tail bags, so I never bothered. Then I got a 3-piece braid in tail bag, and she doesn't mind it one bit! AND her tail has grown at least 2 inches over the winter. It never seems to bother her! I just switch off from conditioner to MTG. Right now it is out because it was rainy, and it was wet, and I didn't want a moldy YoYo tail, gross.

I don't think a tail bag would make the horse itchy, but I guess they could try to itch it out. I've never seen that though, if they want it out, most of them will smack it on their butt side to side until it comes loose.

Good luck!

It's prob not the tail bag itself making your horse itch, it's anything left over on the tail bone. When I do my horse's tail I wash it, condition it, then put in a leave in conditioner to it. I don't like using regular conditioner and leaving it in as it leaves a residue on the tail... if you use it on the tailbone it will dry on and make the skin itchy. Also, if the horse's tail is dirty (at the tail bone) it will make it itchy as well. I do spray Show Sheen or some other coat conditioner on the top hairs every so often, but not too much. Sometimes less is more

Also be sure that you aren't braiding too tight or too close to the tail bone... if you're starting your braid high and tight it could cause your horse to rub... just think of a too tight braid in your hair, really close to the scalp... it gets itchy and uncomfortable
