Tail bags and wrapping the tail?

If you want to wrap the top of a horse's tail to get it to lay flat, how long can you leave it wrapped? and I know it can't be tight... Also what tail bag do ya'll think is the best?

Hmmm I would be carefull doing that. That can cut off circulation to the tail. For short peroids of time would be ok, I wrap the top of my horses tail when I trailer them so they dont rub it. If I am taking them on long trips I check the tail or take it off for a bit when I walk them around and strech there legs.

If you use vet wrap don't leave it on too long (leave on only 1 day at max) it cuts off the curculation so much that sometimes you have to get your horses tail docked. I don't know if it's a good idea (I've never tryed it) but could you use a polo wrap? for the tail bag thing you can make your own with a long sock or any kind I think is fine.

You usually just do it at a show a little while before your class...remembering to slide it off a couple of minutes before your class.
I use a polo wrap that has been dunked in a bucket of water and wrung out.
I do not wrap tight and only firm enough to hold it in place for a little while. It is only done to help get the hair down enough so that the top part of the tail will look nice...but remember it only has to look nice for a short while and usually from several yards away...where the Judge stands...
What might look horriable to you while your standing right there next to it is probably not even noticable from the Judge's point of view! Besides most Judges are horse men and women and understand about horse's and their tails...so as long as your horse is clean, well groomed and turned out I don't think a bit of frizzies is going to hurt.

Never have I seen a good moving horse lose because a few tail hairs are out of place.

Judges are horse owners too (most of them) and they know a "fly hair" Happens. And really, they can't see the tail head hairs nor do they take THAT much notice. They glance at every horse for a split second. Watching movement, quality, and ten million other things in that short amount of time and move onto the next horse.

They look at EVERY horse and move to the next gait, and repeat the process.

The only time they get a CLOSE look at your horse is when you line up, by then, they already have you placed 99% of the time. Very close calls will be observed for backing, but overall, it isn't the BIG issue.
