Tack Auctions

Hey, quick question. For those of you who've attended tack/horse auctions, what do you typically see tack going for? Is it close to retail price, or does a lot of stuff seem to go for cheap?

Haha, thanks.

It depends on what kind of tack, new or used. and it depends on who is there... luck of the draw type thing.
Some people are really dumb when it comes to bidding.. and they continue to bid up a product where there is 20 of the same thing, and they only want one.
I don't know if you have been to one so just in case a quick tack aution 101
A lot of times there are multiples of things.. let's take blankets for example. And there is a huge stack of them let's say 25. and there is multiples of each size. People will continue to bid it up even if they only want 1. Well a few people doing this will make the price go way up.
Then people get wrapped up in the bidding and it goes higher then retail.
Then you see the owner smile a lot, because she knows that she's getting more than expected.
but there are a lot of times you can get things really cheap..
But i find that about half of the things you can get cheaper on line.

Used tack auctions are my favorite, cause you get things amazingly cheap.
They usually just take some cleaning.

Well that's certainly reassuring!!! We don't really have auctions near me, for horses or tack, (closest is Bakersfield once a month which is a good 2 hours away!) so it's interesting to see this. This is what they are offering: http://3bsaddles.com/Auction.htm

I live in Southern California. Everything and everyone is online. Nothing's old fashioned anymore!

I agree, checking eBay would work. However, I don't have any brand names or any real info, you know?

It depends on who's bidding and how bad they want it. Some people go nuts at auctions and lose all sense of reasoning. I was at an auction this past weekend that had a bunch of used western saddles on it. About 90% of the saddles had white mold on them but people still bid them up over $400. To me, that's insane. No way would I pay that much for a moldy saddle. I want another saddle but not that bad.

My advice is to shop around first so that you have prices to compare to what you are looking to buy when you go to the auction. Set your limit on what you will pay for something and don't go above that. I think a lot of people have buyer's regret after they get their merchandise home and find out they paid way too much for what they got. Don't get caught up in the bidding frenzy. It's a game for some people and they get a huge kick out of bidding things up.

Or you could go with my dad's simple, straight forward advice: Never bid against a woman! It's never failed him yet at any auction!
