1. An awful smell. Not the typical manure smell but a really awful smell. 2. Black gooey discharge. 3. If it goes on far enough the horse will become lame. 4. The frog will appear very wet and mushy looking

Thrush very very rarely causes lameness. It is more of a nuisance than anything.

Thrush is disgusting and I seem to have to deal with it at least one a year. It has never caused my horse to go lame, nor does it seem to cause him any discomfort, other than the fact he has me messing with his feet every darn day with bleach water and a hoof pick.

Thrush is a bacterial, eats away at the frog structure, and it CAN cause lameness. Fortunately, it is directly related to hygiene, and with care and attention to what your horse is standing in all day, you can go a long way toward solving the thrush problem. I have known a horse (that belonged to a questionable riding school) that had to be put down as the result of thrush gone out of control. Very, very sad. Erin |

BUt.... speaking of thrush... I've been told that the common thrush remedies that you can buy are not particularly helpful because they in effect "seal" the frog. Since thrush cannot thrive with exposure to oxygen, it was suggested to use hydrogen peroxide once a day to sort of dry that area out, and then of course, keep the feed super clean and on dry footing. thoughts on this? I LOVE Thrushbuster. its the blue liquid in the small bottle. It has always cleared my girls up in one treatment. Kopertox is another that I will use (it's green) and proof of it has stained my shirts and jeans! ahhahaha When in a pinch I use Bleach water. (daily applications for over a week sometimes) Hmmm...sure is wet here in NH...think its time to do my "just in case" applications! |

Thrush comes from a horse standing in wet, nasty ground. Last spring was horrible in WI and it seemed like everyone at the barn had to deal with it. Kopertox does seem to work great. Bleach has done wonders for me also. I hope that this year is different, but who knows... |
