    swollen udder and teats

HI! This is my first thread! how exciting!

My horse has very swollen teats etc it almost looks like she has *****. They are not hot and she doesnt seem to be uncomfortable when you touch them. She has been on bute now for some time (years), as she has had the worse possible case of laminitis. She is on two butes in the morning and one in the evening. We did wonder whether this swelling has anything to do with this. She doesnt go out at the moment, and hasnt been out for a little while due to infections in now two of her feet. Any ideas?

Any suggestions as to what could possibly be causing this would be very much welcome. I am completely at a loss. I have tried to research on the internet before calling the vet - having just had to pay out thousands for her laminitis treatment, xrays etc etc etc

My mare gets the same thing. She doesnt have any health problems(that I'm aware of) but sometimes she does have swelling. I have talked to a few different vets. They all seem to think that its the same thing, she ingests too much clover and it makes her body think that she needs to produce milk..or something. It makes sense to me but its hard to explain as most people wont understand! lol. Im not sure if this will help you at all, but hopefully it will help you!

My filly swells badly, had bloodwork done and put her on antibiotics...... nothing.

I then read that if you applied castor oil to the teat , it draws out the swelling.

It works great and is harmless to the horse.

We had a mare like that at a stable I used to board at (my friends and I were kids at the time and were convinced she was preggers from a stallion that was never even near her...) well long story short the vet came and she wasn't pregnant but her body had started to try to produce milk much like RRACRESQHS had mentioned.. there was nothing wrong with her and it went away but I would still call the vet and ask his/her opinion...

One type of clover produces large amounts of estrogen This may be what they're talking about.

You can buy it at any grocery or drug store in the health section.

Has your mare ever had any foals? My 23 year old tb mare gets a bit of a bag in the summer, and you can even express what lookss like weak colored milk from them...

Are you sure she has not been around a stallion?

Hi, everyone! I have a question about my mare she is 7 years old and has had one foal two in a half almost three years ago, I still have her son and I have another mare aswell. My problem is that yesterday I was grooming on her and noticed that her teats were swollen (like there is milk in them) and hard but not hot or sore and nothing came out when I "milked" them. I have read alot within these threads and notcied a couple of things, the thing about eating a certain type of clover causing estrogen increase and a certain type of hay. But I havent given them any hay since the grass is fine right now out here and i guess she could have gotten into clover patches since I do live in the App. Mountains and we have 17 acres. I'm just not sure I called my vet and they are coming out in a couple of weeks I just wasnt sure if it was possible that she may have been breed through a fence. We have studs all around our property but none have gotten into our field and she hasn't gotten into theirs. HELP!! Im so confused! Thanks alot.

It may be best to start a brand new thread rather than add on to the bottom of this one
