Swollen Ankles on a VERY Pregnant Mare

My 12 year old QH mare was due April 7 and hasn't had baby yet. Her back ankles are noticeable swollen. For me when I had my babies my ankles got swollen the last couple weeks. Just didn't know if horses have this too. Can't exactly get her off her feet. =)

What could this be? Is it normal? What should I do for her?

it can be normal mate, shes probably not moving enough, if it persists or gets way to large then seek vet advice

best of luck with baby and mama

it is the same principal as your pregnancy... if you can't get her off her feet, try getting her to move some... even if you can walk her around on a lead... anything will help at this point.

best of luck with the new addition

I personally wouldn't worry to much about it. (I have no foaling experiance) Because it happens to alot of women that are close to delivering. And it also happend to our dog when she was really pregnant.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I am getting a little worked up I think. I didn't think that she would go late and so every little thing make me nervous, or at least makes me question.

If I am understanding right... This is not unusual and maybe getting her out to walk a bit more would help.

They aren't terribly huge just obviously larger than normal, and more so then yesterday. She gets turned out every day but I think she pry jus stands around outside too. I will take her for a little walk later.

Again thanks a ton. Makes me feel a ton better.

Maybe a little liniment rubdown would feel good on her ankles?

When my mare was heavy in foal she liked being hosed and having her back rubbed.

Heavenly Jumper, it's still a little cool here in Nebraska for hosing....

I haven't used linement in a LONG time. Is there a brand that you recommend?

I know that there are some topical things that can affect human babies, is it the same for horses?

She absolutly LOVES it when she gets her dailiy brushing. So I am sure that she would like the rubdown and or back rubs. She is too much fun. I love having her and am REALLY excited for baby to make it's appearence.

Oh, another question, sorta different subject. My husband told me that fillies are born early or right at due date and that colts go late. Is that something you all have seen?

my big mamma had her foal July 30th last year so she was hot and sweaty and just about begging for the hose.

As for liniment, I like Absorbine...but that's just because it's what I've always used.

I don't think it would be a problem for pregnant mares but it wouldn't hurt to call and ask. The phone number is - 800.628.9653

eterinary Liniment speeds the natural process and brings instant warmth to overworked or strained muscles and joints by stimulating the flow of blood. The blood quickly carries off toxic wastes that cause stiffness and swelling. At the same time, substances in the bloodstream lay down a network of tissues to aid the process of repair to reduce swelling. It is also an antiseptic that helps prevent infection while healing minor cuts, bruises, abrasions, and relieving insect bites. The unique herbal formula can also be used as a brace and tightener.
here is a link with info -http://www.absorbine.com/absorbine/product_detail/5

Well, if it helps...my filly was 2 weeks early!

For back rubs, you could try one of these -
